Art Project #45: Oil Pastel Resist Leaves
Ian chose this oil pastel resist painting for today's art project. But once again with these resist type of activities we were a bit disappointed in our results. Our colors were not nearly as bold as those shown on the original site we were following.
I'm not sure what we're doing wrong or if we just weren't fearless enough with smearing on dark black paint but it's pretty frustrating when our results are not what we expected them to be. We're learning a lot through this 100 Days of Art Challenge.

I'm not sure what we're doing wrong or if we just weren't fearless enough with smearing on dark black paint but it's pretty frustrating when our results are not what we expected them to be. We're learning a lot through this 100 Days of Art Challenge.
To make our oil pastel resist leaves we needed:
- Leaf shapes to trace
- oil pastels
- watercolor or heavy duty paper
- black tempera paint with water and brush
Once they had them traced we colored them in using oil pastels. We used a few colors per leaf and yet we wanted to keep a few white spots inside the leaves.
When we were done coloring I showed the boys how they could add vein lines inside their leaves if they wanted to.
Once we were all done coloring we used some black tempera paint to color over our paintings. Straight black seemed too dark and covered up the leaves entirely so we watered it down a bit and watched the paint bead up off of the oil pastels.
Unfortunately as the black paint dried it turned more gray and we didn't get those dramatic color popping results we were expecting. Luckily the boys liked their final projects anyway and had fun with the whole process.

ReplyDeleteThese turned out great, even if they weren't what you planned! :)
Thank you!
DeleteThis seems like fun. I love the look of utter concentration on your son's face. That the kids enjoyed the art and loved what they created is sometimes all that matters. #mg
ReplyDeleteThat is true. They did enjoy themselves; once I cajoled them into getting started.
DeleteWow! I'm very impressed:) Love all your art projects!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThis is a cute idea. My four year old would love creating this kind of art!

ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome! I love arts and crafts and luckily I have one boy how loves it as much as I do; the others just tend to humor me.
DeleteThis is a great craft for kids, thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pin and for hosting!
DeleteArt doesn't always turn out the way we'd envisioned, but these are beautiful anyway! Thanks for linking them to the Virtual Fridge!
ReplyDeleteThat is so true and I think it's an important lesson for the boys to learn. I also remind them that, like authors, artists don't like everything they make. Thanks you.
DeleteMy children love art, Aspen in particular is art obsessed and unlike me she has talent lol #mg
ReplyDeleteLOL! I have one that loves art and two that tolerate it; I'm hoping to show them all that they have some talent and try to find "easy" projects so they feel successful and have fun.
DeleteThis looks like fun!
