Love to Learn: Easy and Fun Ways to Learn About Plants and Seeds

Image
My boys and I have studied plants and seeds many times through our homeschooling years.  We always start each unit by reading lots of books and, of course, we try our hand at growing our own plants. Some of our favorite ways to learn about plants and seeds include: 1. Planted beans in plastic baggies so we could see the plants sprout and take root.   Overnight I soaked some beans in water.  We pulled one bean each out of the water and compared it with a dry, hard bean.  We opened up the larger, soaked seed and found the baby plant inside.  We planted a few of the soaked beans and a few dry seeds inside a plastic baggie with wet cotton balls.  I did this project with wet paper towels instead of a cotton ball back when I was teaching and thought it was a great low- mess way to grow seeds in the classroom.  It also doesn't take up much room and the kids can really see first hand all the growth that would usually take place under the di...

Love to Learn: 5 Easy Meals That Kids Can Make

Image
I love watching my boys working in the kitchen.  Through the years they have all learned to cook and bake a variety of foods.  I always start them out with fairy easy "meals" to prepare and then gradually work them up to harder ones. Some of the easiest meals my kids enjoy making are: 1.  Cheese Quesadillas-- My youngest son has even learned to grate his own fresh cheese over the flour tortilla.  He often microwaves them for a real easy meal but my boys do know how to pan fry them too. 2.   Grilled Cheese Sandwiches -- Once my boys could butter the bread without making a hole in it they were ready to learn how to make this yummy sandwich.  (If you don't want them cooking yet Peanut Butter and Jelly  is another great option) 3.  Pasta and Sauce-- While my boys still don't like draining the pot after cooking the pasta they do all know how much water to put in the pan, how to tell if the water is boiling, and how to read the box of pasta to know ho...
