Favorite Outing of the Month: Learning More About Vincent Van Gogh

Image
I bought tickets for the boys (Alec and Evan) and I to head into Worcester and see the immersive Van Gogh experience at the last minute. I had only recently heard that this was available in Worcester and thought it might be fun to do over the long Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.  I originally booked our tickets for Monday but switched it to Sunday when I saw that we were forecasted to get quite a bot of snow Sunday into Monday. We headed out at 9 on Sunday morning and both the city and the museum were pleasantly empty feeling.  The first room we turned into had this 3-d sculpture of Van Gogh's head that kept changing colors and patters and was surrounded by lots of story boards about his life, his family. and his art history.  The next room was filled with reproductions of some of his paintings. We learned even more about Van Gogh and his life. Now I have never been the biggest Van Gogh fan but I did take an awful lot of art history classes and focused on many of th...

Fire and Ice Festival Sculptures

Image
One of the towns near us hosts a fire and ice festival each February.  We have yet to make it to the actual festival but this year we did go see the ice sculptures the next day. It's so neat to see so much detail carved out of ice! A few of the carvings had lost some details and were showing signs from the power of the sun but thankfully it was cold enough that the sculptures lasted this year. There were lots of different colored blocks around the patio that become colored lanterns at night  My boys and I were quite taken with how they looked up close.. This was quite the throne!  Complete with swords carved all around it. This train had slots carved it in that were filled with colored sand art!

Exploring the Interactive Exhibit at the Cameron Art Museum

Image
Our first full day in North Carolina there was a tropical storm watch/ warning.  We hadn't made any plans prior to our trip since our visit was a surprise and after a few false starts we found ourselves at the Cameron Art Museum.   They were between exhibits but had a fun interactive exhibit set up in the lab that we were encouraged to try out.  It was THE BEST time I have ever had at an art museum!! This sculpture greeted us as we walked in the door.  This sculpture is made of cardboard!  We could not get over the details...    Once we entered the interactive lab we were told to pick a coloring page-- we could choose between fish, octopus, sea turtles, seahorses, etc.   I chose a sea horse.  We then sat down to color them however we wanted...  anything within the black outline would get uploaded and become part of the full mural.  My completed seahorse  Once the coloring is finished the images are scanned and you wat...

Virtual Refrigerator-- Fired Alcohol Art

Image
Thanks for stopping by and joining us again this week as we host another virtual refrigerator arts and crafts link up. Oh boy did we ever have fun with this art project.  My boys heard the word "fire" and they just could not wait to dive into this new project I found on Pinterest for us to try! Fired alcohol ink art looked so intriguing and I just knew I would not have to cajole anyone into trying it out. To do this project you will need:  alcohol inks alcohol cotton balls or a way to sprinkle the alcohol glass (we used glass from dollar store frames) a lighter a flame resistant surface We put some tin foil down to protect our tile table from the inks; not sure if they'd stain or not.  Then we set our piece of glass in the middle and dripped some of our alcohol inks over the surface.  W We had two different brands of alcohol ink and as you can see one squirted out much faster than the other. Then we wet some cotton balls with alcohol and squeezed them over our projec...
