Art Project #95: Balloon Splatter Painting

Oh my was this ever a fun and super messy art project!

After a week of pretty intensive art projects my boys and I wanted something fun where we focused on the process of making art and no so much the end product.  Since it was a nice sunny day I offered to come up with something fun we could do outside.

This was a perfect addition to our 100 Days of Art.

I took a small funnel and added liquid tempera paint inside each balloon.  I think I filled a good 20-30 of them. Once I added a bit of paint to each balloon I filled them up with air and tied a knot.

The boys brought out a giant roll of paper and got the yard set up while I was inside filling balloons.  They chose what size paper they wanted and found something to weigh the paper down with and something sharp to use to pop the balloons.

We then brought all the balloons outside and a tub of glitter too. I tried to make some balloons glitter balloons but I could not get the glitter to go through the funnel and fill the balloons so I figured they could just sprinkled it onto the we paint if they wanted. They each put balloons on their paper and started popping them.  Ian chose to throw his darts at the balloons while Alec and Evan used a nail.

After the first balloon splattered paint up Ian's arm, leg and face the boys decided to throw their pointy objects at the balloons while standing a bit further away.  It was impossible to get pictures of the balloons actually popping but I think you can get the idea from these photos.

Can you see the nail flying through the air right towards the balloon??

I somehow even managed to get paint on me!  Just look at Alec's hands... and the darts.

We left them in the yard to dry and cleaned up hands and feet good enough to head inside and have showers.  We also washed off all the darts.

It was so much fun and we enjoyed watching the exploding paint!  It would have been better if we had waited for a day that was warm enough for the boys to run through the sprinklers or jump in the lake afterwards since that would have saved us all the cleaning up but we really didn't mind.

    1. Yeah you definitely need something sharp enough to break open the balloons.

    1. I loved our end results; I just wished we had used a heavier weight paper that would have held up better. These were quite brittle once the paint dried.
