Art Project #89- Melted Bead Wind Chime

We made melted bead wind chimes and sun catchers using our pony beads, a muffin pan, a mini muffin pan, a metal pie plate, a drill and some string.  I just LOVE how these came out!  They were another perfect addition to our 100 days of Art Challenge.

First we lined our pans with a single layer of pony beads.

Then we melted our beads in a 400 degree oven for 25 minutes; it will smell like melted plastic.  We opened our windows and put a few fans on to help dissipate the smell.  This can also be done on a grill or with a toaster oven moved outside if you'd prefer not to have the smell in your house.

As they cooled we could hear them popping.  It was pretty neat to listen to.  Once the pans were cool to to the touch we flipped them over and most of the discs fell right out.  Those few that were stuck inside fell right out with a few wacks to the back of the pan.

Alec decided how he wanted all of the discs laid out and I used a drill to drill 5 holes in the largest disk from the pie plate.

I then drilled two holes in all the medium size disks and one hole in each of the smallest disks.

Using fishing line (14 lb size) we strung our disks together making sure to include a hanging loop at the very top.

Then we hung it in the garden to enjoy!

  1. Love this. Did you feel that they popped out well enough that you can use the pans for food after washing or do you have art pans?

    1. They popped right out of all our cupcake pans and with a quick washing I will definitely use those for cooking... however, I think I may have ruined my metal pie pan. In our bead selection we also had some color changing pony beads that were a different texture/material than the traditional pony beads and a large cluster of them melted together and stuck to the pie plate. I'm pretty sure if I had stuck to traditional pony beads I would have been all set.

  4. How fun! Looks like you get the beauty of a wind chime without the noise (that drives my husband crazy). Thanks so much for sharing at the #happynowlinkup!

    1. Yeah my husband it not a huge fan of the sound from the wind chimes either; these do make a bit of noise but they're so much quieter than traditional chimes.

  8. What a great idea and fun craft idea to do with the grandkids. I'm actually thinking the discs would make cool outdoor coasters too.
