Art Project #71- Geometric Hearts

I wanted to do something artsy with the boys to add to our 100 Days of Art Challenge that would help us celebrate and decorate for Valentine's day.  We searched around for some fun ideas and finally came up with these wonderful geometric hearts.

First I took plain paper and drew a large heart on each one.

The boys then took a ruler and a pencil and made lines going vertically and horizontally across the entire paper.

They wanted to use oil pastels to color them in and we talked about cool and warm colors.  We separated our pastels into two piles and I told them to color their heart using either warm or cool colors.  They then filled in their backgrounds using the opposite color family.

I had made the mistake of outlining my work with black oil pastels before coloring it and found that the black smudged with the color so I suggested the boys hold off and add the black last.  I then gave them the choice of using oil pastels or markers to outline everything.

It was a fun and easy Valentines' craft that they all seemed to enjoy.

I just love how colorful and unique they each are.
