Art Project #49: Making Harry Potter Wands
Evan was feeling a bit under the weather one afternoon and while watching Harry Potter asked if it was possible to make his own Harry Potter wand. He does have one from our trip to Universal Studios but for Evan to be ASKING for a craft project I knew I just had to say yes!
As part of our 100 Days of Art Challenge I am trying to encourage my boys to come up with ideas for art and am trying to say yes whenever possible.
We went looking for some smooth and fairly straight stick in the yard. We found a grove of saplings and managed to cut a few perfect looking sticks for our project.
We brought out our glue gun and some glue sticks and added some ridges where the handle grip would be. I chose to add a few loops the whole length of the wand mainly because my stick wasn't so straight and smooth.
Once the glue was dry we used shades of brown and red paint to paint our wands. I stuck with dark brown while Evan mixed brown and red to make a dark red color. We painted our wands a few sides at a time leaving them to dry when necessary.
Evan was thrilled with our final results and immediately took off to cast some spells.

DeleteI have seen this craft before done with dowels, but I LOVE that you used real sticks. How fun!
ReplyDeleteWe looked up a few tutorials and were dismayed to see that they all used dowels; something we didn't have. I knew if I put him off and ordered/ bought some he probably wouldn't to do it later on so we improvised and I have to admit it was much easier to find straight(ish) sticks than I thought.
DeleteThese look amazing!! We have just started playing the Harry Potter Hogwarts Battle deck building game at our house, and our wands have made a resurgence. We might have to make some new wands this afternoon to go along with the game! BTW, the game is a lot of fun - my 8 and 12 year olds are asking to play every day.
