Art Project #38: Making Minecraft T-Shirts
I saw a few stenciled Minecraft T-shirts on Pinterest and knew that HAD to be our next art project for our 100 Days of Art Challenge.
I had planned on helping the younger two boys a creeper shirt so I bought them some plain green shirts but knew Ian would want something on black (if he wanted to participate at all),
When I pulled out all the supplies Alec informed me he wanted to make a Minecraft Ocelot instead. I told him if he could draw or design it I could help him paint it.
We decided to use some blank square tiles to help us lay out our designs and then tape around them using painters tape. Like this:
Once we had everything taped we moved outside onto the patio and the boys started painting. I wasn't sure if the paint would bleed under the painters tape or not so I cautioned them to paint from the outside (taped areas) to the inside; so that they would not be pushing the tape up at all.

We decided to use some blank square tiles to help us lay out our designs and then tape around them using painters tape. Like this:
Evan's creeper face
Taping around the squares
The completed face
Ian just needed a big square taped off
Alec's ocelot face
Once they were finished we set them aside to dry. Once dry Evan's was all done but the other two boys needed to either remove tape or add new pieces to put the next coat of color on... like this:
We added tape on top of the white square to make the skeleton face.
After each coat we put the shirts in the sun to dry and decided if we needed to add detail anywhere else. Alec's shirt took a few different color coats; the yellow face, the brown spots and the nose.
Waiting for the paint to dry so we can remove the last bit of tape and paint his nose
Once they were completed we let them dry for 24 hours and then turning the shirts inside out I heat set them with a flat iron. Then we kept them turned inside out and washed and dried them. They've held up to a few washings already!

I love this -my grandson would want one and he would love to help. Did you use fabric paint?
ReplyDeleteI used FolK Art brand multi surface acrylic paint (for the most part though I think a few bottles were just acrylic paint).
DeleteThis is fantastic! My kids would go nuts for an activity like this! Thanks for the awesome idea :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! The Minecraft images lend themselves nicely to some easy blocky pictures.
DeleteWhat a smart way to do this with the tape! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It's like making a giant stencil for them.
DeleteMy grandson would love to make one of these Mindcraft tee shirts. Thanks for sharing this idea with us at Snickerdoodle.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteWonderful DIY for kids! You can try some online practical tests on Maths and English for your kids at http://www.kidsfront.com/
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWhat a great idea! My son is going to love this when he sees it, and we're going to have to try and make it at our house too. Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pin; glad I found a project your son will enjoy.
DeleteJack asked for Minecraft for Christmas. I'll have to keep this in mind. We did glitter heart shirts and shamrock shirts last spring. I bet the kids would be up for making cool shirts again.
ReplyDeleteMy boys are quite obsessed with the game; they have built such amazing houses, yachts, and roller coaster designs. It really is fun... I think we're making Minecraft ornaments this year.
