Art Project #5; Mother's Day Crafts and Cards
The boys helped make some fun Mother's Day pens yesterday.
I have made these pens may times over the years; usually using white flowers and giving them away as bridal shower gifts. But I thought they'd be a fun craft for the boys as part of our 100 Days of Art and they were perfect for Mother's day.
They are so simple to make.
We buy inexpensive pens, pop off the backs and throw away the covers. (I prefer pens like these because the back pops off easily). The boys each picked out their own fake flowers to use and we bought some floral tape.
We hot glue the flowers onto the ends of the pen. We fill up the cavity of the pen and when we pop the flower off the stems there is usually a small 1/2 inch piece of plastic that sticks down from the flower. We pus that into the hot glue as far as it will go and hold the flower in place for a few minutes until it's secure.
Starting at the base of the flower we wrap the pen in floral tape allowing the tape to overlap itself. We pinch the floral tape together and wrap it nice and tightly.
Usually the floral tape sticks to itself so well we just trim the end off and make one final wrap around the the pen but yesterday we had to tack most of them in place with just a tiny dab of hot glue.
The boys enjoyed this project and while I thought they might want to give the pens away to their grandmothers or aunts for Mother's Day they seemed to enjoy just using them themselves.
I offered to help the boys make some Mother's day cards. I always make my own cards and have a whole room filled with paper crafting supplies. They didn't want to so I decided to sit down and make my own cards.
I used white cardstock to make the cards. I found some blue patterned paper and a nice big blue and green sticker to use down the side of the card. I wrapped some matching ribbon around the card and tied a knot (since I usually can't get bows to sit nicely!). I then stamped my flower image on a piece of white paper using my markers to ink the stamp. I mounted my flower stamp on green and affixed it to my card. As I was making it I thought that the subdued colors would lend themselves nicely to a sympathy card too.
I also used white cardstock for the card on this one. I stamped a quarter sheet of olive paper with some olive flowers and put a purple strip of paper down the middle; tearing one side. I found some white mulberry paper and tore it in a square. I inked my flower stamp using makers and stamped it on white. I layered the stamped image on the mulberry paper and layered that on my card. I love mulberry paper and how light it makes the card feel. Such a pretty spring time card!
We haven't had any sunshine in over a week and these flowers helped cheer me up!

ReplyDeleteThey are super simple and so cute. We've decorated them a bit more by tying little bows to the top too or hot gluing some leaves onto the bottom of the flower.

It is nice and easy. I've seen them presented in a small terra cotta pot with foam inside it too. Just poke the pens into the foam and it looks like a bouquet.
