100 Days of Science #79-- Learning About Hummingbirds

We have always enjoyed watching the Hummingbirds.  A few years ago we got this cool hummingbird feeder that attaches to the window so we can watch them from inside the house.

I taught my boys how to make hummingbird food this month; mixing 1 cup water with 1/4 cup sugar and bringing them to a boil until the sugar dissolves.

Once the mixture cooled off we put it on our feeder and sat back to watch.  Within hours we had a few hummingbirds showing up.

Even drinking they often have their wings going a mile a minute.

They are so tiny and so fun to watch. We've since added a few hummingbird friendly plants to our deck and patio and see these birds all over the yard.

The boys reminded me of the time we had to rescue the hummingbird from our garage and our quick searching on the internet taught us how to revive him. It was so satisfying to watch this bird that looked like it was near death perk right back up and fly off when ready.

We've also read a few books about hummingbirds too; our favorites include

1.  About Hummingbirds; a Guide for children

2. Hummingbirds

  4. What a great thing to teach your kids. I love that you captured pictures of the hummingbirds. My mom loved and so did a co-worker who had a feeder right outside of her window so she could see them.
