My Favorite Picutre Books from Childhood
I was always an avid reader and enjoyed looking through books long before I could really read them all by myself. There were a handful of books that really stuck in my mind through the years. There are, of course, many others that I only vaguely remember and couldn't seem to come up with the title to add them to this post. But overall I think I did a pretty good job coming up with many of my favorite picture books from way back then. It was so much easier to remember my favorite chapter book from my tween/teen years.
The Lonely Doll
The Littlest Angel
Crosspatch
There's a Monster at the End of This book
Green Eggs and Ham
Popcorn
Strega Nona
The Berenstain Bears
Mr Men and Little Miss books
Little Critters
Corduroy
The Little Lamb
The Velveteen Rabbit
Tikki Tikki Tembo
Where the Sidewalk Ends
The Giving Tree
The Bear Who Slept Through Christmas
Curious George

I only remember one of these from my childhood. We owned several of these books when my kids were little that I read to them. Sweet memories!
ReplyDeleteI bought and read many of these for my boys to enjoy too.
DeleteI remember Where the Sidewalk Ends the most! We had a few of these, though. We were a book house but we also went to the library quite a bit.
ReplyDeleteWe were/did too.
DeleteOh my gosh such nostalgia! Ok you have a few of my faves here- "The Monster At The End Of This Book," "Where The Sidewalk Ends," and "The Giving Tree"- love love love
ReplyDelete😊
DeleteAww! These all look like sweet books! I used to love the Mr Men and Little Miss books, I had so many of those.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember if we owned them or just read them frequently through the library but I for sure remember so many of them.
DeleteYou know I love looking at old children's book. Of course I don't know most of these (a German childhood before yours), but I loved "The Velveteen Rabbit" when I read it last year.
ReplyDeleteOh The Velveteen Rabbit is such a sweet one.
DeleteI remember Tikki Tikki Tembo! I haven’t thought about that book in years. It’s funny what books stick in your memory from when you were little. Such a great list of childhood favourites.

It really is! I think I remember that one so much because of the unusual name and I remember chanting it along with the teacher reading it aloud to our whole class.
DeleteMemories! I had The Little Lamb!
ReplyDeleteI loved those books with the beautiful photos... it made me want a little lamb of my own.
DeleteDr. Seuss, Berenstein Bears, Curious Geogre, Corduroy- I remember all of those!
ReplyDeleteThe classics are the best!
DeleteSo many of these I remember, but The Little Lamb! Oh, Joanne! I loved this book so much. 💜
ReplyDeleteRight?! I mean, I am not really an animal person but oh my gosh I wanted my own little lamb so badly after reading that one.
DeleteWhat a fun, looking back into the childhood. I read Pucki, or Astrid Lindgren...
ReplyDeleteGreetings by Heidrun
It is a fun look back.
DeleteSo precious!! I still read, watch, and love The Berenstain Bears to this day! 🥺
ReplyDeleteThey are so much fun!
DeleteWhat a great flashback. My husband never heard of Where the Sidewalk Ends, so I got it from the library a couple of years ago and we read it together.
ReplyDeleteXOXO
Jodie
I loved anything by Shel Silverstein.
DeleteI don't think I read any of these when I was a kid, but I read several of them to my own kids and my grands. I also read some of them to my students!

Oh I bet you did. I learned about so many new/great children books while working in day care and even at the school. It's how I "found" Harry Potter. Good children's books are good for all ages.
DeleteOK, NOT from my childhood - but as a retired librarian - I loved so many of these. Reading aloud to students was my favorite thing! My last name is very long ( Ukrainian) and I would read Tiki Tiki Tembo as an intro each year to say "hey, you think my name is long - get this!". Years later I was at a wedding, introduced to someone and they said " you were my librarian...and he rattled off the entire Tikki Tikki Tembo. One last thing - Strega Nona - I had a book with recipes from fairy tales. One I still make is "Strega Nona's Magic Pasta"....it's really Pasta Carbonaro, but on my recipe card, it's Strega Nona's Magic Pasta! Thanks for a post filled with memories!
ReplyDeleteOh I love that your student remembered you and the book you read aloud.
DeleteWhat a walk down memory lane. The only one I remember is the Grover one!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteWell, this was a trip down memory lane! I loved all the Berenstain Bears books...Courdory and Tiki Tiki...other faves!
ReplyDeleteThanks, it was fun to write.
DeleteI remember so many of these from my own childhood and my classroom. I taught kindergarten and first grade. I still have tons of them!
ReplyDeleteMy master's degree is in early childhood education and I taught pre-k through grade 3 and had amassed quite a collection of picture books before having kids.
DeleteOh "The Monster at the end of this book" is so good! I remember that one for sure!
ReplyDeleteThat was one book I just KNEW I had to buy for my boys too.
DeleteWhat a fun post and such a blast from the past! I loved the Mr Men and Little Miss books. My boys have collected quite a few over the years, too.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteOh I love all of these! I'd only add Bread and Jam for Frances - I loved those books too. I bought so many of your list for my own boys too
ReplyDeleteI do remember Bread and Jam for Frances. I'm pretty sure one of my teachers read that to us in school.
DeleteI see a few of my favorites too -- Shel Silverstein, Corduroy, Velveteen Rabbit... sigh.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad!
DeleteI love how these stories stay with us long after childhood, almost like old friends we can revisit anytime. Thanks for sharing such a nostalgic collection!
ReplyDeleteYes, I like that too.
DeleteI had that Little Lamb book! Oh wow! So many memories from this post. thanks for posting ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteI'm much older than you, but I know many of your books. I was an elementary school teacher for several years before I got into social work. I loved to look at children's books. #MMBC
ReplyDeleteOh fun! I love looking at children's books.
DeleteThe only two I remember is Green Eggs and Ham ( From my kids) and Where the Sidewalk Ends - again from my kids..
ReplyDeleteI pretty much had Green Eggs and Ham memorized word for word after teaching.
DeleteThat's a lovely list. I loved the hungry caterpillar and the books by Enid Blython.
ReplyDeleteI loved Eric Carle's books but didn't "discover" him until I started teaching preschool. I don't think I've ever heard of Enid Blython.
DeleteI loved so many of these, too! And you just brought back memories with The Monster at the End of This Book! I haven't thought of that book in forever!
ReplyDeleteAw, you're welcome!
DeleteSo many fun books! I remember reading many of them to my own kids and to my kindergartners, too! My daughters always loved "The Monster at the End of This Book"
ReplyDeleteIt was just so cute and dramatic.
