100 Days of Science #75-- Jumping Conversation Hearts

This was such a fun and quick science experiment!

We filled a traditional drinking glass most of the way full with club soda (any clear carbonated beverage should work).

Then we dropped in a conversation heart or two (you can also use Necco wafers) and watched them... first the hearts sink to the bottom but as the bubbles bead up on the surface the hearts begins to rise.

Eventually the heart will make it's way to the top; a few bubbles will pop and it will slowly sink back down again.

We tried breaking a few hearts into smaller pieces, floating multiple pieces at once, and even letting a bit of soda out of the glass.

It really was a fun science experiment to watch and we talked about how and why it works.
