K is for Kinney; Jeff Kinney

I couldn't blog about books without mentioning Jeff Kinney and the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Book 1) by [Kinney, Jeff]

Without these books, I'm not sure my oldest would have read anything when we first started homeschooling.

He came out of second grade at our local public school hating to read and really wanted nothing to do with reading ever again.  I encouraged him to find books he enjoyed and when he asked me if he could read in his room, in his head, and not out loud to anyone I agreed.  He brought one of the Diary of A Wimpy Kid books with him upstairs and the next morning, amidst many giggles, he filled his two younger brothers in on all the antics of Greg, Rowley, & Roger.

I had a reader!  He devoured this series and read each book the minute it became available at our library.

My middle son has since worked his way through the whole series and I know it's just a matter of time until my youngest reads them.

Written as a diary and filled with cartoon drawings these are fun books about a boy who gets into mischief ALL The time!  While I don't always like the way the main characters may act it does give us a great jumping off point for many family discussions and the stories are interesting to my boys that just keep on coming back for more.

And a new book was just released last month!

  2. So glad it was one your son liked. I am glad I have girls - they always ran the other way from these books. ;) - Lori

    1. LOL! Yeah they aren't really very "girly" that's for sure. I do miss not getting to introduce anyone to Sweet valley high or Babysitter's club books...

  3. My oldest was the same way. Even as a Junior, he is excited for the newest one! These books, and the movies have been a staple in our family. We love them!

    1. We just got the newest one in from the library. My boys were miffed that they changed the actors for the last movie but I can't wait to see it with the new characters. Hoping to find it at the Redbox this weekend.
