Blogging Through the Alphabet-- B is for Brian Selznick

When we first began homeschooling my sister recommended we read the book Wonderstruck together as our family read aloud.


It was a HUGE book and at first I thought there was no way my boys would ever sit still to listen to the story.  But we picked it up off the shelf at our local library and immediately noticed that half of the story was told in picture format-- beautifully illustrated pictures that just drew us right in.

While we fell in love with the illustrations of Brian Selznick first we soon fell in love with his story!




In no time we were all hooked on the book and could not put it down.  We LOVED the mystery and intrigue and trying to figure out how and when these two stories were going to collide.

We finished the story with both a sense of completion and a bit of sadness knowing it was over.

We tried to read a few other books and finally decided to just look up the author's name and see what else he had written.

We then spent a few months reading through the rest of his books.

When we finished listening to The Invention of Hugo Cabret we watched the movie Hugo and compared the two.

We also discovered some of his picture books at our library and quickly devoured The Houdini Box  as well.

    Okay - another to add to my list. I have heard of these but they have not yet appealed. I will have to look at them at the library this week. Thanks for sharing. - Lori

    He sounds like a captivating author. We’ve seen the movie Hugo and really liked it. How did the Book compare?

      We really loved Wonderstruck; I'd recommend starting with that one.

    I have read Wonderstruck and loved it. I forgot about it until now, though! My 6th grade daughter would probably love it! I'll have to get it from the library this week. Thanks for linking up!

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? Dollar Store Candy Cane Wreath

Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. 10 on the 10th... on the 8th

 Since the 10th falls on a Sunday this month (and I don't blog on the weekends) I thought I'd share my 10 on the 10th a bit early. I love that it also coincides with Friday Favorites since Marsha's 10 on the 10th is often one of my favorite prompts to answer.  Rather than asking us specific questions this month, Marsha has asked us to share 10 things we like to do or eat in November. What's Up Wednesday in November

It's the last Wednesday of the month and that means it's time for What's Up Wednesday. This will be my last post of the month but I'll be back on Monday the 2nd with some of my favorite Prime Purchases of the year.  What We're Eating: Sunday: Steak (and tofu) stir-fry over rice Monday: Weight Watcher's American Chop Suey  with salad Tuesday: Crock pot Philly cheesesteak grinders with chips and salad Wednesday: Pumpkin pancakes with fruit and bacon Thursday: Our menu hasn't changed since 2020..Though we will sub out the crescent rolls for some homemade bread/rolls that Alec's cooking up for us.  Friday: Leftover turkey pie Saturday: One of our favorite soup recipes; though I'm not sure which one yet!
