Alec's Greece Trip; Days 15-17
Monday June 29th, Alec's 15th day on his Greece trip found the group exploring the the bee museum on Rhodes & the aquarium of Rhodes too, as well as a small co-op and other assorted shops plus another winery (or 2?).

30th--Their last full day in Greece called for a morning of working on their final essays and learning some Greek dances. Alec and a few of his friends took their afternoon free time to get themselves tattoos before gathering together for one last family meal and gelato.

July 1st was a VERY, very long travel day for Alec he woke up at 4/4:30 in Rhodes time (9/9:30 pm on the 30th here) to take a short flight into Athens then after getting their bags they turned right around in the airport, went back through security and waited for flights home. He had a 10 or 11 hour flight home with a 7 hour time change so he landed in Boston at 5 p.m and couldn't deplane right away since there was already a plane at the gate they needed and it was having mechanical difficulties. By the time they finally got to their gate, got off the plane, went through customs, and picked up baggage it was after 6 by the time we laid eyes on him.. then we had just over an hour ride back home. He was beat as he had been up for nearly 22 hours straight by the time we walked in the door.
He showed us all his souvenirs the next morning when he felt somewhat back to normal after a full night of sleep.

He had an amazing time and has said that he really hopes to get back to Greece one day and explore more of the smaller towns and less of the cities.

ReplyDeleteMom is rather ambivalent about the tattoo. I'm glad it's small(ish) but I'm not a huge tattoo person.
DeleteWhat great adventures up until the end! That bee museum looks really neat. (I love bees and want to keep bees but I'm pretty sure the HOA would frown upon that!) Alec brought back so many things! That's awesome- they will be great reminders of his trip. His birthday gift to you is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYeah, they visited a couple bee museums in Greece and I thought they were really neat. I have a friend that has an apiary... though last year the bear got all her honey! Bees aren't as easy to keep as you'd think. My husband's uncle has been trying for years but every so often they just up and leave and he starts all over from scratch.

DeleteLove Alec's pics. I wonder if a tattoo is part of the overseas experience? My son came home from Bali with one on his forearm. I had a very dramatic mum reaction!

There were 6 of them that were going to get tattoos so it sure seems like it! (Though 2 were talked out of it as they were continuing on for another 2 1/2-3 weeks in Germany and the tattoo place thought it might be too hard to keep it sanitary and moisturized).

DeleteSounds like a wonderful trip with a really wide variety of experiences. We're all about small villages and the countryside too. I love a city but cities are cities the world over and while there is some variety there's nothing like the personalities of the small villages to give you a real feel for life somewhere else. My daughter's in-laws have bees and keep us supplied with honey which we love. I'm sure you're glad to have him home!

ReplyDeleteI was a little surprised when he texted to give me the heads up; I never knew he was interested in tattoos!... this the kid that used to need extra nurses to hold him down for a shot while he screamed the whole office down.

ReplyDeleteI only heard of it a day or two ahead of time as in "oh just to give you a heads up a bunch of us are thinking of getting tattoos on our last day..." so I think it was more spur of the moment.

DeleteI think this trip was just so amazing! They perfectly blended culture, history, and culinary skills into one experience. I had no idea there were so many wineries in Greece! But, wow! That was a long trip home!

DeleteThat was a wonderful way to wrap up the trip. The return trip always takes a toll and all you want to do is sleep afterwards. It would be lovely for him to back again one day. Also, a very happy birthday to you!!

Yeah, travel days can feel so long. But he was happy that he really didn't suffer from any sort of jet lag on either end.

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like the most fabulous trip -- loads of fun but learning too. I love that a lot of his souvenirs were food! And that he did dancing the last day. I'd love that. I can't imagine how exhausted he was after all that, the travel and flight and then the interminable waiting. (That must have been frustrating for you too!). I don't think one night's good sleep will do it! I'm thinking a few!
