Photos from Alec's Greece Trip Days 4 & 5

Thursday was another very busy day. They headed closer to the shore and checked out a grain museum.

wheat

barley

They were all so happy to see the ocean (and get some of those cooler ocean breezes to go with it).

They checked out a raisin packaging facility.

They visited a winery. They ended up visiting many wineries on their trip and while they all blended somewhat together Alec learned really on that he did not enjoy wine... at all. Many places offered several tasting sample and he said after just a sip or two he often felt sick so he tried to sip slowly and usually offered his other samples around to anyone else that wanted more. He said one time they came around to fill everyone's glasses with water between servings and since he hadn't drank much of his yet and the pourer wasn't paying close attention his wine was watered way down with water... and he liked that much better. That and the winery that let them all try a kid wine made for children and not nearly as potent were his two favorites. LOL! A chip off the old block I guess as I have never ever acquired any sort of taste for wine either.

Friday June 19th also included lots and lots of stops. They were pretty much on the go most days.

Alexia bakery where they learned to make a couple different types of fried dough. Though they used the same batter Alec said the thin circles of dough taste completely different from the larger rounds we're used to seeing/tasting around here.

You have to work quickly to get the circles as the batter wants to break in half

They had stopped in at a place that makes cheese and he snapped a quick photo of their refrigerated display case.

goat cheese feta and sheep milk feta

The first bee museum they toured. He came home with a few jars of honey.

They got to portion out cookies and those aprons they are wearing acted double as souvenirs too.

He came home with a pile of recipes and so many food things he picked up throughout his stay. Pretty sure his butter cookies with nutella filling were from here.

A cathedral he liked that was right near their hotel. He took quite a few random photos of things that he liked the exterior architecture of.

  1. What an incredible trip! All the food things are so interesting to me. One of my best friends is Greek and she is an amazing cook. She gave me a Greek cookbook.

    1. He started describing spanakopita to me and 1/2 way through I was like "oh spinach pie! I love spinach pie!" I think I'd love Greek food... just not so much the actual olives.

  2. Great pictures! It's funny that he learned he didn't like wine. That knowledge isn't likely something that he thought he learned- that's the neat thing about traveling, you never know what you're going to learn about yourself because for one thing, you don't know all of the experiences you'll have. How cool about coming home with recipes and the apron souvenir is a great one!

    1. He did know he didn't like wine or really any alcohol of any kind since his friends do try to get him to taste sips of their stuff at college but he really, really did not like wine... and they tasted a lot of it.

  3. What an amazing trip. Looks like quite a fun adventure. Funny story about the wine getting mixed with the water and that he liked it better. How nice to learn some authentic Greek recipes.

    1. Yeah, he really enjoyed his time in the kitchens and he came home with lots of prints outs from the recipes they made. He learned a lot of variations to them too as they often talked about how no 2 people ever make the dish exactly the same.

  4. We enjoy wine here, but Greek wine no. It looks like they saw so many interesting food related things. I hope you get to sample some wonderful Greek food now that he's back.

    1. Yeah, since it was a culinary focused trip so much of what they did centered around food production and wine.. all but 1 student was a culinary student and a good 1/2 dozen of them were in the school's wine appreciation club.

    1. Yeah, I kept joking with him that if they needed more people to fill out the trip that I'd be more than happy to make that sacrifice! Greece is high on my list... though admittedly I'd like to spend more time on the Greek Islands like Santorini and Milos.

  11. Wow! This truly was the trip of a lifetime, but I have a feeling he will have many more just as wonderful! I don't like wine, either. I have tried, but I just want it to taste like cranberry juice...so that's what I drink instead!

    1. He did great remembering to send me lots of photos each day. I loved seeing what they got up to. Though it did help to hear his stories after the trip as I often was left guessing what things were or what they had done.

    1. I loved that they got so much time to cook/bake. I knew they were touring lots of food places but I didn't expect them to get so much hands on experience.

    1. It sounds like he ate A LOT all week long-- lunches were a bit sparse but they were warned about that ahead of time but dinners were very, very filling. And they often got to try snacks/samples wherever they stopped.
