Summer in my Garden

My garden tends to show off the most in late spring and early summer. By mid- July/ beginning of August there isn't much color left anywhere. But those explosions of color at the start of July really make up for it!

This is the time all of my hydrangeas and lilies burst into bloom. My dahlias are still going strong!

I have lots of varieties of lilies tucked here, there and everywhere.

My hydrangeas start out rather light and get darker and darker each week; changing colors several times before fall fully settles in.

I have some pure white hydrangeas too that are such a fun and different variety than the blue.

My mother in law bought me this plant for mother's day and it's been blooming all summer!

The mother's day hanging basket Alec bought me is still going strong too!

By August the hydrangeas are turning a deep purple.

    1. After our cold snap this week I think many of mine are starting to think it's fall and they're slowly shrinking...

  2. That first bloom is absolutely amazing! Wow, how pretty! I also really love that close up of the hydrangeas. I am pleased with my zinnias this year and will plant a border of them next summer by the bird feeders.

  3. So pretty! This is inspiring me to plant more colorful perennials. I have a bunch of hostas and they're mostly green stems and leaves with just a little bit of color.

  5. I just love hydrangeas so much! But, that first flower is gorgeous. I think I would like to plant some zinnias. I didn't know what they were until recently.

    1. That first bloom is a dahlia and I just googled to see what the difference between that and zinnias are (I know so few blooms by name!).

  7. So many lovely blooms! I'm so jealous that you have such beautiful hydrangeas. I have tried numerous times to grow them to no avail. I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

    1. I have three hydrangeas that are doing really, really well and one that really, really struggles. From what I can understand they are pretty finicky plants.

  8. What a beautiful and vibrant description! It sounds like your garden puts on an absolutely spectacular show right at the start of summer. Hydrangeas, lilies, and dahlias all blooming together must create such a breathtaking burst of color and texture. It’s wonderful how those peak weeks of brilliance make the quieter, late-summer moments feel peaceful rather than lacking. Thanks for sharing a glimpse of your floral paradise

  9. What a glorious peak season your garden must have! There's something truly magical about that early July explosion—when the hydrangeas, lilies, and dahlias all come together in a symphony of color. It sounds absolutely worth it, even if the show doesn’t last all summer. Those breathtaking weeks become all the more special. Thank you for painting such a lovely picture with your words!

    1. My hydrangeas are the only ones that last all summer long but while I do miss that explosion of blooms it is so magical when it happens... though this year my dahlias have been constantly blooming too!

    2. I'm pretty sure many of them were taken with my cell phone (I have an Android) but others were probably taken with my Cannon and the zoom lens.

  17. I love hydrangeas! At our last house, we had two different kinds...the ones that change color, and then the lace cap. I didn't really like those, but I wasn't going to dig them up (though the new owners did). The ones I have now are just white. I love your dahlias and have always wanted to plant them. I'd say you have a very green thumb, Joanne!
