Pumpkin Scones with Chocolate Glaze

Today I am joining in with some blogging friends for a fun Fall Recipe Blog Hop.  I just love the crisp cool fall air! It lends itself so nicely to baking and warm, comfort meals.  This time of year finds me cooking up quick breads and pastries of all kinds.  I had planned on sharing my chocolate chip banana bread today but then realized I did share this recipe last year!  (click on the link if you're looking for that one).

Instead I headed to the pantry and see what else I had ingredients on hand for and decided to try making some pumpkin scones with chocolate glaze.

I started with our Mango Scones with Lime Glaze recipe and modified it for fall.

Ingredients:

For the scones:
1/2 cup milk (I used skim)
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tsp. vanilla
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 stick butter; frozen and grated
1/2 cup 100% pumpkin puree

Chocolate Glaze:

3 Tablespoons cocoa powder
3 Tablespoons butter
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 Tablespoon HOT water (from the tap but steaming)

The first thing I did was grate the butter and set it back in the freezer until needed.

I preheated the oven to 400 and lined a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

I mixed together the milk, sour cream, and vanilla extract in a small bowl and then set that aside in the fridge to keep cool.

I mixed up a second bowl with flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon.

Once mixed, I added in the grated butter and used 2 forks to mix together until coarse crumbs had formed.  Then I added in the pumpkin and the milk mixture;  stirring well until combined.

The batter was turned onto a lightly floured surface and formed into roughly a 9 inch circle.  I cut the dough into 8 pieces; like pizza and placed each wedge onto the cookie sheet.

I baked them in the oven for 16-20 minutes until they were a light golden brown.

As they cooled on wire racks, I mixed up the chocolate glaze; I wanted a thick ganache glaze so we turned to our favorite ganache recipe... only to find that the heavy cream had turned bad.  I decided to whip together a chocolate glaze instead.

In the microwave I melted the 3 Tablespoons of butter and then added in the cocoa powder; mixing until I had a nice smooth mixture.

I added in the vanilla extract and powdered sugar.  Once I had a thick frosting-like/ brownie batter consistency I added in the hot water and had a wonderful glaze.  I drizzled it over the still warm scones.

Then we dug in!  My boys and I agreed that these were delicious! We like pumpkin but we aren't HUGE pumpkin fans and thought the pumpkin was nice and muted.  The texture was fabulous and everyone loved the chocolate glaze on top.

Make sure to stop by and see the delicious recipes my co-hosts are sharing!

  16. I'm not sure if these are anything like the scones we have here in the UK as an afternoon tea kind of thing but I love the idea of eating pumpkins instead of just using them as decorations. I love your simple way to make that super shiney glaze too. These will be a feature at Handmade Monday this week :-)

  17. I love scones, but I've never made them myself. Probably because I'm the only one in my family who would eat them, so I just buy one for myself when I'm in the mood.

    1. So I just tried making them and they were very sticky. I ended up adding more flour. I am wondering if you have the wrong amount in the recipe (2 cups) or if, because I used homemade pumpkin puree, it was too watery and thus made my dough stickier? Any advice??? I ended up adding about another 2/3c of flour as I was shaping it into a circle because it was sticking to my hands and the counter. Now they're baking so I'll see how they turn out...

    2. I did use just 2 cups of flour; I'm guessing the homemade pumpkin puree is probably a bit waterier than the canned pumpkin. Did they turn out okay?
