10 Questions Answered About Thanksgiving

For this month's 10 on the 10th we're being asked 10 questions about Thanksgiving.  While a few overlap with the monthly musings post I answered a few weeks ago most were original enough that I decided to dedicate a full post to them.

1.  Will you watch the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade? Football? Movies? I almost always have the Macy's Thanksgiving parade going in the background while I'm preparing our meal. We always end our day with a watching of Elf... by the fire, eating dessert.

2. Who does the cooking? Fix anything ahead of time? I do all the cooking.  When the boys were younger and I hosted a HUGE Thanksgiving with our family I tried a pot-luck type of meal but as we've dwindled down to just my parents over the past few years it's easy enough for me to cook it all myself.  Plus if I'm honest I'm way to much of a control freak to enjoy a pot luck meal (I like my own recipes!) .

My mom took this- probably one Christmas but it really doesn't look different at Thanksgiving

Of course my boys have always helped.  Last year Alec really stepped up and wanted to pitch in and I'm sure he will this year too.

3.  What time do you eat the big meal? We typically plan to eat around 2 in the afternoon.  We sleep in and eat a later breakfast and with a big mid- day afternoon meal I don't have to worry about food for the rest of the day.

4. Do you set a formal table or keep things more casual? Place cards? Children's table? I do set a more formal table but I have never used place cards or a kid's table.  We had assigned seats at our Christmas brunch each year and I hated it as a guest so I made sure to never do that as a host.

5. Is the food placed on the table or served buffet style? We place some foods like rolls and butter on the table but most of the food is set up buffet style in the kitchen.

6.  Ham or Turkey? What's for dessert? Always turkey and never a ham.  I have a countertop roaster that cooks up a really moist and delicious turkey.  Dessert varies from year to year but always includes our family's apple pie, ice cream, and caramel sauce.  There's usually something chocolatey (some years chocolate chip pecan pie, some years Toll house pie, some years chocolate chip cookies, maybe even a chocolate pudding pie) that we make up and something with pumpkin too.

7. Does your family have a Thanksgiving tradition? Other than watching Elf we really don't have any other traditions that have held up through the years.

8. Yay or nay to leftovers? Favorite leftover recipe? Yay! I love leftovers!!  In fact I look forward to our leftovers more than the actual meal. While I have tons of recipes for leftover turkey we mostly rely on our leftover casserole/pie to use up the bulk of our leftovers.  I've been known to cook twice as much food as we need and make up two casseroles-- one to use the next day and one to freeze for later in the winter.  It's that good!

9. What will everyone wear? Dress up or comfy? In this house it depends on who you ask.  I think it's casual since we mostly wear jeans and a nice shirt or sweater but for my husband and boys that is dressing up.  And I guess compared to what they wear everyday they're right.

10. For what are you most thankful this year? It is so hard to pick just one thing I am most thankful for... I guess I'd have to say our health.  But I am also thankful for so much this year. I started a blog post where I post one thing I am thankful for each day and will post it on Thanksgiving day.  If you have time I hop you'll pop in and read it.

  1. I figured you did all of the cooking but I bet Alec and the boys help with the desserts right? So excited for Thanksgiving!

    1. They help with desserts, they usually peel potatoes, and last year Alec wanted to learn how to help make a few sides too.

  2. It's funny -- we often dress up for a big Turkey dinner. I'd never thought about it before but I guess we have this ingrained sense that something that takes that much work deserves us all looking a little nicer :) So yes, for turkey dinner, we dress up!

    1. I think that' s how my mom always felt and that's why we grew up getting dressed up for the holidays. I enjoy all the work of preparing the meal and knew when I married my husband that his idea of dressing up was jeans without holes/stains.

  3. I was telling Dave about your leftover recipe and he said it's basically mixing it all together on your plate, but I still love the idea of cooking it as a casserole!

    1. Funny enough I don't mix them together on my plate on Thanksgiving (and won't use the gravy) at all!

    1. I would make pecan pie every year if I wasn't the one that ate most of it.

  6. Such a cool post. Will there even be a Macys parade this year? I thought I heard it was cancelled.

    1. I thought I heard they were going to try something virtual this year but yeah, essentially it has been canceled. I mostly just keep on in the background while I work anyway.

  8. Thanksgiving is great! We always start by watching the parade, then watch the Lions (usually we get beat pretty bad). That left over casserole looks amazing!

    1. Aw, thank you! My boys were so skeptical of that movie at first but we all love it; even if we can recite most of it by heart by now.

  12. So embarrassed and horrified to realize I did not comment on the posts of anyone who joined me for this month. Could have sworn I had read your post but this year, nothing surprises me. I am so sorry.

Thank you for sharing a bit about your Thanksgiving. Pinned that delicious recipe for leftovers. I used most of our turkey in turkey noodle soup. And sent a lot of ham home with my sister.

Your table is lovely. And I really like the way you have baskets displayed on that rack. I have some baskets from Panama that are kind of keepsakes. That would be a great way to show them off and keep them safe.

We played games for the first time ever this Thanksgiving. I think that will be a new tradition for us.

Hope you are feeling 100% these days. I am so sorry for being so behind in my blog reading and commenting.

    1. My husband made that basket holder. He made it for his mother but I inherited it when she sold her house.

I am feeling really good these days! Don't worry so much about "getting behind" on your blogging. You've had a lot going on.
