Currently in September 2026

It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for currently with Amy. This month we're talking about what we're Adjusting (to), Baking/Cooking, Decorating, Balancing, and Learning.

Adjusting (to): I'm still adjusting to life with only 1 at home. One of the biggest changes is with grocery shopping and I know it will take me a few weeks to figure out how much we actually need/go through. We haven't really had many leftovers so I might have cut back too much.. my husband is missing having leftovers to take for lunch so I may have to readjust-- or start the week off with a pasta meal and have lots of leftovers he can use all week.

Baking/cooking:  I haven't done any baking but I've been cooking dinner most nights.

pesto marinated shrimp kabobs with rice

pork chops with roasted potato and peas

Mongolian beef with rice noodles and veggies

teriyaki chicken with vegetable lo mein

steak, asparagus, potatoes & mushrooms

salmon, green beans, corn, and potatoes

Decorating: I haven't done any yet but I keep thinking I'll need to decorate for fall soon.

Balancing: I'm trying to balance out the to do list I created for me and the house and just all the list of things I'd been pushing off "until after the boys leave" with all the stuff that has cropped up with my dad's estate. As well as more fun things like photography and nature walks and crafting.

Learning: So much more about the will/ after death process than I ever wanted to know.

Comments

  1. Learning about wills/estates/after death process is super hard as you're dealing with grief and/or complicated emotions and then you have to put that aside to get things done and make decisions. It's hard. It's such a big adjustment when the family members living at home number changes! From practical things like meal planning/food buying to emotional changes- it's a big deal...

    1. One good thing about all the will/estate/grief is that I really haven't had time to stop and think about missing the boys... the adjustment this year has been surprisingly easy. I haven't even accidentally set the table for too many people (something I almost always seemed to do right after Alec went back to school each year).

  2. That's funny that you cut back too much on the amount of food! It's hard, isn't it? Your views on your walks are lovely and that's good that you are balancing those with the horrible business of death.

  3. I can imagine it is difficult to figure out how to cook for fewer people, you’ll hit your stride soon! Hope the school year is starting out well!

  4. Thinking of you and the estate work you are going through- you got this. I am adjusting with the cooking here too. It is so funny because Rob likes to take leftovers too and I am trying to figure out amounts/portions so he can do that- it's a work in progress!

  5. I don't envy you having to learn about wills etc. When my mom passed away in 2015, she really didn't have any assets so the process was pretty basic. Grocery shopping is definitely different, especially for just two. I end up going to the store more often instead of one big shop, and I often just plan one or two dinners each week. Then we eat the leftovers. Hope you're having a good week.

    1. We *think* he has assets but it's still a bit unclear at this point. LOL

  6. Yay for cooking! I haven't cooked much at all lately, which is in some ways a bummer. Not eating as healthy as I'd like.

  7. Joanne,
Great pictures... Adjusting how you cook is definitely a challenge when cooking for less people.. When Joe died, I had to learn to cook for 2 as my son Joey comes everyday for dinner , which is good for both of us...Over the last few months, he as started getting lunch with co -workers 3 days a week which means he only wants a light supper... So again, I had to adjust to that and now make sandwiches or burgers or hot dogs on those days...I think I finally now have that change in our supper habits figured out...

    1. Thank you! I feel like as soon as I have it figured out it changes again. But I guess that can be said about much of life.

  9. Joanne, I love all of the meals you make for dinner. They are the type of meals my husband likes. This time of year is so pretty where you live and I hope you enjoy your hikes and photos. Enjoy this month.

    1. Thank you; I do still have one as Ian hasn't moved out yet (though he had warned me it will probably only be another year or two until he does).

  12. I haven't ever mastered the art of how to cook for just two. Luckily, Mike likes leftovers. I think you should write a cookbook!

  13. We had to do the same with cooking. Everyone moved out, so I cooked less and we still had leftover. Now we have one back and I have to adjust again. It's a constant math problem and I'm no good at math! Haha!

  17. I sorted out some things to bring up for fall, but I just can't make myself start to decorate yet. I decided the week of September 14. I have to be home all week so no excuses!
