Talking About it Tuesday #120

We arrived home Saturday night and I'm busy playing catch up this week. We had a lovely vacation--of course not every moment was perfect. Alec was fighting off a cold most of the week, my husband and I had some pesky admin/tax stuff to deal with that cropped up late in the afternoon the day before we were leaving so that came with us, we learned that Alec was accused of writing his final paper using AI and got a zero (despite not having used AI at all-- but how do you prove that?!).. luckily his grades are super high so even with the zero he walked away with a B but what a disappointment! We consoled ourselves with beautiful scenery, delicious food, and once in a lifetime types of hikes. My recaps will start tomorrow-- all of the posts are very photo heavy between both mine and Evan's photos.

How was your week? Being in a different time zone kind of threw off my blogging schedule but I decided to just not worry about it. I will eventually get around to visiting everything you linked up last week. In the meantime I used a handy random number generator to pick this week's features.

    1. Congratulations! I seem to be far more upset about it than he is but I'm learning to get over it. LOL

  2. Ugh to the cold (I was dealing with one last week as well) to those horrible accusations. I'm glad it didn't impact his grades too badly but how stressful to be accused of that. Can't wait to see pictures of Utah and read about your hikes!! Thanks for the link up!

    1. It really was and at first he was truly afraid it was going to mess up his scholarship as well... but I don't think it will. We got so many really beautiful photos. Utah is so pretty.

  3. Sorry about the Zero for your son. That´s the problem with AI...you never really know if it was or is used . I think that is a terrible development. We had a fine weekend with an Tango Argentino festival. Have a good time and all the best

    1. It really is so tough; he's not the first student I've heard of having this problem either. It's always tricky when a "new" tool is at the ready and no one really quite knows how to navigate it well.

  5. Oh, that is a bummer about Alec's paper. Yes, how would one prove that in today's time? Glad y'all still had a great trip!

    1. Apparently Evan was saying there is some sort of program you can use to record yourself typing and many people cite using google docs version history to show progression of work... but Alec tends to sit and type in one go and somehow just cranks out A's! LOL

  6. Oh, that's so horrible about Alec's paper...yes, how do you prove that? This whole AI thing has sure made education a challenge. We've had problems with our taxes too and are trying to work it out but we can't get through to anyone on the phone so we're really frustrated. Thanks for the party.

    1. It definitely has-- I don't envy teachers OR students trying to navigate this right now. I hope you get some answers soon! Luckily ours was pretty straight forward as my husband's work messed up their report that they submitted so we just had to get them to correct things on their end. I think we're all set not... but I guess only time will tell.

  8. Thanks for featuring my April Reflections! That is horrible about your son's paper. It seems there should be some reliable way to prove a paper is not done by AI. I've read of people using AI detectors on well-known works and even books of the Bible which were labeled as AI when they were not. I know schools are in a tough spot, because most people aren't going to admit their work was done by AI. But, still, it's not right to false accuse students.

    1. You're welcome! We've since started researching what he could do in the future and knowing things like the Bible have been labeled AI at times certainly helps beef up his arguments. I definitely see both sides of the arguments but it seems like at the same time looking at student's past records/scores/works should help eliminate a lot of that.

  9. That really stinks about your son's paper! It sounds like you guys still had a wonderful vacation despite the hiccups!

    1. It really was! Though in all honesty I think I am far more upset than he is (which is probably a good thing!).

  11. I'm so sorry that you faced some stresses before and then during your trip. Never fun! Especially distressing is the AI accusation and not really having any recourse to defend yourself. While grades are important, I'm sure the bigger disappointment is having a loved one's character questioned. Very frustrating! I'll look forward to the recaps and photos from your trip. Thanks for the party!

  12. That is super frustrating and so disappointing. As a teacher, I'm sad and shocked that the schools are even using these bogus AI detectors. They don't work, it's been proven using classic books and documents. I've run some of my blog posts, 100% written by me through these detectors, that tell me they're AI. Clearly, universities should know better. I'm so sorry.

    1. That is good to know! Thank you. While Alec is not the first student I've heard of this happening to I was unaware that these AI detectors were so bogus. I keep telling him he should have at least tried to stand up for himself!!
