Share Our Lives: Staying Warm in Winter

This month for Share Our lives we're talking about how we stay warm in winter.

Having lived my whole life in Connecticut I have lots and lots of practice keeping warm in winter.

Wearing lots of warm layers

Dressing for the season when we need to be outside.

We keep throw blankets in nearly every room of the house and my favorite is the electric heated throw blanket.

We use our fireplace and wood stove in winter to keep the house cozy.

We have rechargeable battery heated gloves, winter jackets, hand warmers, etc. (I mean we don't all have ALL of those but several of us have one or two of those) and they really help when we have to be outside for long periods of time.

I used to be so awful at dressing for the weather and that made a big difference in how cold I always felt. I'm still pretty stubborn about it and more often than not my coat is thrown into the backseat of the car so I rely heavily on my heated steering wheel and heated seats in the car.

Mostly I try to stay inside!

I hope you'll join us next month when we talk about TV shows we love to binge

    1. Luckily the super cold weather comes and goes and we get little warm ups here and there that make it seem a bit more bearable.

  2. I like your last tip the best, lol! We had a super cold Saturday and Sunday and I did just that- for the most part, I stayed inside. I, too, love throw blankets and the fireplace.

    1. That is my preferred way of dealing with winter; I'd happily hibernate the whole season away!

  3. I love the heated seat in my hubbie's car! You dress very stylishly for the winter. We also have some beautiful warm throw blankets for the winter, mainly for time in front of the TV, though we haven't yet upgraded to an electric blanket.

  4. Yes! Us New Englanders are pros at keeping warm in the winter right? Nothing beats heated seats for sure!

    1. For sure; though I don't know why I resisted proper weather gear for so long and just complained while shivering...

  5. I complain about the cold here but looking at that snowy picture makes it seem much colder with you! Eek! All your layered outfits look so good and I would love a proper wood burner in my house.

  6. Down where we are there are so many wind tunnels so it's hard to stay warm no matter how warm I dress. I put extra blankets on my bed, but it makes it so hard getting out in the morning, I'm too cozy!

    1. Living on the lake we get little break from the freezing wind too and hear it making all sort of popping and pinging sounds all winter long.

  7. Just got in from light shoveling and it's cold out today but ... soooo nice too. There's a refreshing part of winter that I love. Wishing you a fun week ahead.

  8. I bet you are a pro staying warm in the cold since you are a native to the northeast! Like many things, if you are prepared with the right equipment/clothing, it helps you deal with it. Hope you have a great week!

  9. I'm weird about using blankets in the house because I don't like when I get up and feel cold again!

    1. Absolutely; I find I get real lazy when that heated blanket goes on...

  10. You certainly know how to dress for winter. Living in Florida, my clothes are mostly cotton and too thin for cold weather. It's going down to freezing Wednesday morning and I have a doctor's appointment first thing. Yuck! I just order new sweatpants on Amazon yesterday for arrival today so I'll be ready! #MMBC

  13. Joanne, these are great ways of staying warm. I love wearing layers of clothes and you always wear such nice sweaters and outfits. Stay warm! :)

  14. Do you have a dedicated spot to keep your blankets? I feel like I need a giant basket.

    1. I have 2 blanket racks; one in each living/family room that we drape our blankets over.

    1. Right?! My husband had one first in his truck and after driving it I just KNEW I HAD to have one in my next vehicle so when it was time for the younger boys to drive and we gave them my car I told my husband as long as my car had a heated steering wheel and heated seat I really didn't care what it looked like. And I have zero regrets.

  17. Colorado Front Range weather is surprisingly mild! We get a few days of snow or "Arctic Blast" weather now and then, but our high altitude hot sun usually melts the snow fast and brings us daytime temps in the 60s. During cold snaps we have gas fireplaces and some cozy throws. One thing I learned to do is have a humidifier going on cold days as moist air feels warmer.

  18. That's the same with Michigan! You wear it far better than i do! I'm all about extra blankets and sometimes microwave a beanbag to take to bed for my feet or hands, then kick it out after I'm warmed up!

  19. Brr. When I lived on the east coast, I disliked winter so much. Now that I live in Tucson, I'm thankful and grateful we have milder winters. You sure know how to compensate for the cold. Love your various wraps, throws, and scarves. First time I noticed this link-up. Be well Joanne and stay warm and suggly.

  20. It's freezing here, too and we do everything you do. You have it down to a science! Those heated seats and steering wheels definitely make a difference.

  21. Would you believe that we use our heated car seats even in AZ?? I swear they are the best.
I used to have a space heater in CO to help in the winter.

  23. I love heated seats in cars, but none of our cars currently have them. The next one definitely will! I have throws and afghans all over the living room. I discovered the joys of merino wool socks and wear those a lot, too! Do you find that the temperatures you think are cold in the fall are warmer in the spring? That's how I feel, but it will be a bit before we have those kinds of temperatures (well, that stick around).

    1. I like merino wool sock too and I definitely find temps that I think are cold in fall feel warm in spring (or winter! It was near 40 here this week and felt like a nice "warm up"!).
