Currently Hodgepodging-- January 2026
It's the first Wednesday of the month and time for Currently with Amy. We'll be talking about what we're loving, resolving, planning, eating/drinking, and watching/reading.
Loving: We had an early birthday celebration for Alec while he was home on break; his birthday is later this month but as of right now he's not planning on coming again until spring break in March. It was great to get together with the grandparents and celebrate.
We bought new dinner plates and bowls last month and I am LOVING them!
Resolving: To cut sugar and white/bad carbs out of my diet-- 90% of the time. I won't cut out whole grains or potatoes though but I do want to cut back on them.
Planning: I'm not really planning anything right now. With the holidays and birthday celebrations behind us and no trips coming up for another couple of months I'm just enjoying the everyday right now.
Eating/drinking: I am drinking water; it's the only thing I ever drink unless I'm on vacation in a "southern" place that offers sweet tea.
I'm definitely trying to eat healthier meals like this tofu & shrimp stir-fry over cauliflower rice (yes, it's the same meal shown above just zoomed in on the food). After so much junk food during the Christmas/New Year holidays I'm craving all the lean protein, vegetable packed dishes.

For breakfast or lunch I often have 1/2 cup berries with yogurt, chia seeds, and either pecans or raw almonds.
Watching/reading: I've always got several books going off the top of my head I'm currently reading The Au Pair Affair, How to Winter, The Lost Apothecary, and I just finished The Lions of 5th Avenue, The Night in Question, Good Grief, & Fangirl Down. I've definitely started January with a bang!
I've been watching My Lotto Dream Home-- a series I started years ago but never kept up with so I have lots of back seasons to catch up on.
I've watched season one of All's Fair on Hulu and really enjoyed these strong female lawyers.
Season 2 of The Pitt starts tomorrow and I couldn't be more excited!
I also really enjoyed Regretting You on Prime; it's based on a Colleen Hoover book I read years and years ago.
And since it's Wednesday it's also time for Hodgepodge Wednesdays with Joyce!
1. What are three words you would use to describe your 2025?
Cultured (we saw more plays and things than in any other year I can remember),
Breathtaking (mostly in reference to our Glacier NP trip, but other moments were worthy of this moniker as well)
Well-read.
2. I ask this question every January, and I always get comments about how we shouldn't be banning words. This is fun and games so just play along : )
Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse, or just general uselessness (go here to read about how the words are chosen). Here's the list for 2026-
67 • demure • cooked • massive • incentivize • full stop • perfect • gift/gifted • my bad • reach out
Which one (if any) do you use most often? Which one of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word you think should have made the list?
I definitely used cooked most often in a "I cooked dinner" kind of way since I always seem to be either cooking or baking but not in a slang way. I haven't used my bad since I was in college/high school and Clueless had just come out.
I don't think I'd care about any of these getting banned or not but probably 6 7 since I hear it's not even a word... but I've never heard anyone utter in real life anyway. I always think EPIC should make the list... gosh it is still SO overused.
3. What are your nightly rituals? Is that different from your 'ideal' nightly ritual? If so what's your ideal?
I don't really have nightly rituals: I eat dinner, take a shower, brush my teeth, and either read or watch TV until bed. Then I just climb into bed.
4. January 6th is/was National Bean Day. Do you like beans? Which one is your favorite? Last thing you ate made with beans?
I do not like beans and I can't remember the last time I ate beans... I will eat hummus occasionally so I guess.. chickpeas are my favorite beans.
5. Are you easily embarrassed? Elaborate.
I honestly had no idea how to answer this when my youngest pointed out that I'm not around people enough to put myself in a position to be embarrassed! LOL.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
My husband was telling me about the new washer/dryer in one unit that someone at his work recently bought. It takes them just under 4 hours for 1 load of laundry to be washed and then dried. All I could think was that I wouldn't be able to wash one load while the other was drying. It happened to be a day I had washed bedding as well so I had washed 5 or 6 loads of laundry that day between bedding and clothing-- I literally could NOT have done that with an in 1 unit. BUT I could see using one if it had existed years and years ago when it was just the two of us in a tiny apartment... Do any of you own one or know someone that does?

I love your new plates and bowls!
ReplyDeleteI do not like the all in one units. I have had vacation rentals that have them. I can't reach the top part! But, I do a wash that is speed and then add cold water (wash all my clothes in cold) so it only takes 25 minutes and then the drying part takes like 50 minutes. I don't overcrowd my washer. So, that is pretty quick for one load! My sister is constantly doing laundry and I think she needs to stop doing her kids' laundry and they go through too many clothes.
Thank you! I am not talking about a stackable unit but it is literally one unit that washes clothes, drains, and then becomes a the dryer too. ALL in one unit; not two stacked together.
DeleteWe bought a new washing machine and dryer just last summer and in researching washers and dryers, I saw the combo unit and my mind was blown! As soon as I got over the coolness of the concept, I realized exactly what you did about how long multiple loads would take. I like my new washing machine- it has even more unique/custom settings than my old one did that had quite a few. In the first two photos- the Happy 20th Birthday cake topper- did you make that yourself or purchase it? Just curious as I figured one of your crafting machines can probably make it? But maybe not? I don´t know enough about those types of machines.
ReplyDeleteI made that cake topper with my Cricut and some glitter paper and glue.
DeleteHappy birthday to Alec! I always end up watching the lotto dream home show at some point. Haha
ReplyDeleteI just started the Pitt because it’s on Hulu. Is season 2 on HBO?
Thank you! Season 2 releases tomorrow but I'm guessing it will only be available on Hulu with the HBO extension.
DeleteI love your dishes. I need to replace a few of mine that are crackling but haven't gotten around to that yet. I feel like I still do a lot of laundry even though it's just the two of us. If we exercise and hubs works out in the yard that's a load. Your words for the year are good ones! And no worries about the link-I deleted the incorrect one.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYou are such a reading machine- love getting recommendations from you! Oh I need to check out that show on Hulu- looks like I would enjoy it- thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome!
DeleteUnder 4 hours? That's a long time!!! I can do a load in under 2 and I like having separate units so (like you said) you can dry a load while another one is washing. Loved your answer to the embarrassed question!
ReplyDeleteRight?! I can't imagine a load of laundry taking that much time; however it uses FAR less energy that a normal washer and dryer. But still...
DeleteHappy early birthday to Alec! Your food always looks so good. I am so excited for The Pitt too, for some reason I thought it came back on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteDon't put yourself in a position to be embarrassed...that is my philosophy as well!! I can't imagine not enjoying beans:) And, yes, your 2025 was very cultured. And breathtaking!!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Thank you.
DeleteOMG- we need to finish season one of The Pitt! We love that show.
ReplyDeleteIt is fabulous!
DeleteI've seen those washer/dryers and I don't think it would work for me.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget if you cook your potatoes and put them in the fridge and eat them after...(the next day) they are then starch resistant.
XOXO
Jodie
Yep, I do that... but they still make my blood sugar sky rocket afterwards.
DeleteYour new plates and bowls are so pretty looking. It's great to get back to eating healthy food now that the holidays are over. Your meals always look so healthy with a lot of veggies.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteHappy early birthday to Alec!
ReplyDeleteI am trying to eat a bit healthier but your meals put mine to shame! That stir fry looks so good!
I love your words to describe last year and the photos!
I would never have a washer/dryer in one as I like to have a load washing and one drying. It doesn't make sense for my family but I get it would for a couple of single person.
Aw, thank you!
DeleteI love your new plates and bowls! And I am cracking up at your answer for "are you easily embarrassed?"- same here!😂😂
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you so much!
DeleteI love your new dishes, and we have a similar nightly routine. Your reading is off to a stellar start in 2026! I can't wait for the Pitt either. The washer/dryer story reminds me of our experience in the UK. They were separate units, but literally took hours to do a load. The dryer never really got things dry either. Getting a good ole American set of washer and dryer was one of my favorite things about moving back.
ReplyDeleteThat would drive me crazy-- we had a few years where I hated our washer for not really getting our clothes wet but a dryer not getting them dry would be just as bad.
DeleteGlacier is a breathtaking place! I also like the new plates. My daughter has one of those washer/dryer units at her house at college, but I haven't ever used one.
ReplyDeleteIt really is!
DeleteHappy early birthday to Alec! We had few sweets or even carbs for Christmas so I didn't have that let down after. I really like the new dishes. Mine are all plain colors...maybe I need some prints! I didn't know another season of The Pitt was coming out so soon. That has to be one of the best shows on television ever!

We think so too! I'm always sad when an episode ends!
