Talking About it Tuesdays #82

Happy Tuesday and happy August to you all. I hope the new month is treating you well. We have been having beautiful weather this week-- sunny and in the 80's! I was hoping to go on a few excursions with the boys but Alec happily picked up lots of extra shifts this week so Evan and I hope to do some fun things closer to home like kayak and hike and maybe get some ice cream. We'll see.. How is your week going?

      I haven't seen any in CT either so I like to pretend we don't have them either... though I have heard from neighbors that they've spotted them a time or two.

    We had nice weather too, except ours was in the 70's all week and we loved it. It was a nice reprieve from the heat, but I hear the heats coming back later this week. Thanks for the party.

      Ours seem surprisingly quiet lately but we've seen all sorts of other wildlife-- turkeys, deer, bunnies galore and even an owl!

    We have had gorgeous weather as well!!! I'm so happy to be in the 80s and I never thought I would say that, but after weeks of high 90s I'm so ready for cooler weather! Thank you so much for hosting! I'm excited to jump in!

    That's so funny that my bear post was a popular one. I wish I had really been able to get a photo of that bear! I mean it was really probably that big but sitting on it's butt on my porch! lol!

      Nature is so fickle when it comes to photos. My boys joke that animals don't like me because they always move just as I'm clicking the shutter button and I'm left with an empty frame.

      I always say I love to see wildlife but the bigger they are the further away I'd like them to be-- I'm perfectly content to get a photo and then have to zoom in!

Favorite TV Shows Growing Up in the 80's and early 90's

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? I can remember planning sleepovers and time with friends around TV Show lineups of our favorite shows... or else trying to set the VCR to record our favorite shows if we weren't going to be home. Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. Movies like Mom's Night Out, Christmas Vacation, and Grown Ups make me laugh out loud. 7.  When my ...

Alec's Accepted Student Day at JWU

Last spring when Alec started his college planning I was pretty surprised that he only wanted to visit 2 colleges out of state (he visited a few in-state with his high school culinary class).  He ultimately decided to apply to just the 2 colleges we visited-- Johnson and Wales University (JWU) and the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Both ranked as the #1 & #2 schools in the U.S for culinary and baking/pastry arts. Funny enough out of his 2 culinary teachers he's had in high school one attended each of those schools!  Photo of harborside campus from last spring JWU Future wildcat photo also from last spring Visiting the CIA over the summer We were lucky that both schools are easily visited in a day and we had a great time touring them both. Alec made sure to ask lots and lots of questions. Prime Purchases in August

I've been pretty pleased with myself and how little we've been using Amazon. Since we got rid of Prime in December I am definitely waiting until I have a large enough order to qualify for free shipping and usually only for items I can't find around town. So I've only place one order in July and 2 in August!  I won a $50 gift card (thank you Billie Jo!)  plus I found an old gift card from a Christmas or two ago and decided to splurge on a few items for our hiking trip. Since I never shared the few items I bought in July either I thought I'd add those to today's post. All in all for 2 months worth of shopping I think I did really great!    In July I bought a refill of this toothpaste; I just love it.    and I bought myself a new activity tracker when my broke while birthday shopping with my mom. 100 Days of Science #68-- Index Card Tower

My boys did such a wonderful job with their spaghetti bridges and popsicle stick bridges that I decided to look up some other fun STEM challenges.  I found a fun index card challenge that I thought they might like.  I handed each of them a package of index cards from the dollar store and asked them to build the tallest tower they could just using index cards.   Evan struggled quite a bit at first not thinking about folding the cards in any way but once we saw what his older brother's were doing he hatched a new plan.  Every now and then they'd stop to measure their towers.. being very careful not to knock them over. Ian build his tower on our coffee table making sure to use a nice wide base. Ian's tower was the tallest by just a few inches and Evan had the shortest. This challenge really got them thinking about structural integrity and they had to be real careful of how they moved about too. ...
