Anniversary Trip to Mystic Seaport
Instead of an overnight trip this year, my husband and I decided to spend last Sunday in Mystic. We're heading out on a vacation to Acadia soon and with our anniversary falling on Memorial Day weekend we didn't want to have to fight the crowds driving anyplace too far.
Mystic is about an hour an away from us and while we've taken the boys to the Mystic Seaport a time or two we had never gone by ourselves as adults. We enjoyed exploring the Nantucket Whaling museum (our trip here) and figured it would be just as much fun to explore this living history museum dedicated to preserving what life was like in an old new England seafaring town.
It was a chilly, cloudy day so I added a light jacket over my sweater and wore comfy sneakers since I knew we'd be walking a lot.
The museum grounds cover 19 acres right along the Mystic river and we explored just about every museum building they had open-- and we only saw a handful that were actually closed on this Sunday of the long holiday weekend.
We were there for 3 hours and learned even more about whaling, ship building/ restoration, and even toured an old whaling boat. I can't imagine sleeping on that thing for years at a time! It's also crazy to realize that most of the whalers didn't even know how to swim. That was not considered a needed or "useful" skill for hunting whales... on the ocean... using harpoons.

After touring the museum we decided to leave our car in the lot and walk the 15 minutes or so to downtown Mystic for lunch and a bit of window shopping.
We ate lunch at The Engine Room and I got the fish and chips while my husband got a 1/2 roasted chicken. Both our meals were delicious!
We kept walking towards the drawbridge and checked out the shops on both sides of the streets. Then we stopped on a bench for a bit and just sat in the shade talking and people watching. It was so mobbed with cars and pedestrians that we were so glad we decided to walk! It seemed like everyone was driving around in circles looking for some place to park.
After a bit we decided to head to Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream where they have been making and serving delicious homemade ice cream since the 1800's! The line was out the door but moved quickly and was well worth the wait.
I tried two of their custom flavors-- Seaport salty swirl (caramel ice cream with peanuts, chocolate covered pretzels, pb & caramel swirl) and Mystic Mud (chocolate ice cream with chocolate chunks, cookies & brownie bites, fudge, M&M's and heath bar pieces).
It was a delicious ending to our day!

Looks like the perfect day trip! And I love your outfit!
ReplyDeleteSame! That town is so cute and it looks crowded. I kind of like the overcast nature. It adds to the appeal of Mystic!
DeleteAw, thank you both! We had a wonderful day. Mystic is a great little town but wow was it ever crowded.
DeleteWhat a fun day- Happy Anniversary! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWhen Abby and I were in New Jersey for a month, one of our friends who lived in Connecticut for three years suggested that we go and see Mystic while we were somewhat in the vicinity. We never got around to it- going to NYC was closer and easier so we did for excursions. But I looked into Mystic and wanted to go. It looks like a really neat, historical place.
ReplyDeleteIt really is a lot of fun and they have an aquarium and several other pretty large/unique shopping areas as well. The area near the drawbridge is one my husband had never explored before (plus we really wanted some good homemade ice cream).
DeleteThat ice cream looks and sounds delish! Mystic looks like such a charming little town, what a fun day!

DeleteWhat a fun getaway - the perfect way to celebrate your special day!
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot of fun.
DeleteI haven't been there in years! Looks like a fun day.
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly we don't get there all that often either!
DeleteWhat a beautiful town! I prefer the "let's walk around" way to tour and enjoy as well!
ReplyDeleteI'll pick my feet over driving through crowded areas any day.
DeleteLove just a quick get away - far enough away that you feel like you get a break from home.
ReplyDeleteLove your pink tennies! So cute!
That ice creammmmmmm - WOW!
Aw, thank you!
DeleteHappy anniversary! Sounds like you had a wonderful getaway. Mystic looks like a lovely place to visit. Ruth@playworkeatrepeat
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteIt sounds like you both had a lovely time. What a great place to visit, such an interesting place. Fantastic photos!
ReplyDeleteWe really did have fun.
DeleteHow fun! Your outfit was adorable!
ReplyDeleteIt was just perfect for the weather too! Not too hot, not too cold.
DeleteWow, what a great little trip for two! Makes me hungry for fish...ha!
ReplyDeleteI always want fish when we're near the shore; I was kind of surprised that fish and chips seemed to be the only seafood on the menu!
DeleteMystic looks like a really fun place to go any time you have time! I have always wanted to go whale watching. Your ice cream looks delicious!

Thank you! I've never been whale watching but we have definitely seen whales before.
DeleteThe ice cream looks yummy! I've been to Mystic a couple of times and always enjoyed my visit. It's such a charming little seaside town and you do feel as if you've stepped back in time. A nice way to celebrate your anniversary. Hubs and I need to figure ours out as we'll be at our grandson's birthday on our anniversary weekend, then off to a wedding later in the week. I love some of the nearby mountain towns so maybe we'll spend a day in one of those. Now that my daughter lives nearby we have someone to watch the dog for spontaneous overnights which is nice. Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope you have a lovely anniversary; we actually picked what we were going to do earlier the day we left. It was a great last minute decision.
DeleteI think that sounds like an absolutely perfect way to spend your anniversary! Happy Days!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteWhat a fun day trip. The whaling life sounds so hard, and how crazy that they couldn't swim! You were so smart to walk into town since the parking sounded impossible.
ReplyDeleteYep, whaling life sounded so hard.... on everyone! From what we could read/understand they figured if you got tossed into the sea by the whale you weren't going to last long enough to swim anyway (but I still think it couldn't hurt!).
DeleteLooks like a beautiful day.

Thank you!
DeleteThey couldn't swim?? I mean, wow. Granted they are supposed to stay on or in the boat, but really??
ReplyDeleteXOXO

Right?! Most whale hunt renderings show at least one of the tiny whaleboats being snapped in half or tossed into the air by the whale's tail but it did sound like they were much more likely to die from disease or storms at sea. The longer the voyage the greater the risk of peril but most went out for 4 years or so at a time though we heard of trips lasting 6 or even 11 years!
DeleteLooks like a great day spent together.
ReplyDeleteOh you and I've creams! Looks delicious. But what a interesting trip, Everything with water is!
