Styling Stripes for Spring with Ageless Style

It's the third Thursday of the month and time for another ageless style challenge.  This month it was my turn to pick a theme and I went with styling stripes for spring.  From what I've been reading stripes are supposed to be very in this spring.

Not all that surprising I don't have a lot of clothes with stripes. I tend to gravitate towards plain colors or floral prints when it comes to clothes.  Then I remembered this striped short sleeve sweater I bought a few years ago.

It's white and black with thin bright pink stripes at the hem of both the shirt and the sleeves and it's really comfortable.  It's perfect for those days when it's not super hot but it's finally not freezing cold either.

I paired it with some black pants and some black sandals.

After looking at all these photos I remembered why I don't own much with stripes.. I just don't think they are a flattering look on me.

And then I see that same sweater in this selfie and think it's rather flattering... further confusing my feelings about stripes in general.

I really should have used this outfit below for my photo shoot as I like this one a lot more and it too is just perfect for spring. The vertical stripes are more flattering too.

Two days later I ordered a pair of striped linen pants and I LOVE them so much I have debated about buying them in a second color.

So perhaps I need to stick with vertical stripes only...

What do you think? Do you like stripes?

  1. The stripes look good on you. I joke that I haven’t met a stripe I don’t like, would not wear some of them, still like them though. I was reading a blog today and they featured a striped shirt and mentioned how stripes are in, I thought I’m finally trendy, lol.

  2. I love those linen pants! I recognized that outfit, and I commented on it the day you wore it last weekend. I also really love those vertical stripes...I don't know that they're flattering on me either, but if they're vertical, I can wear them.

  3. I have read that vertical stripes are flattering but not horizontal? I don´t know. I like the subtle pink in the first top that you feature. I like small details like that. I really like the striped sweater with the capri jeans. Super cute!

    1. I tend to hone in on cute little details like that too. I drove my mom crazy when we went wedding dress shopping because I would fall in love with some tiny detail on each dress I tried on.

  4. What a chic striped top! I love the bottom trim. That last flowy look is so pretty and sophisticated too.

  6. You sound like me and my post today. I don't like horizontal stripes on me at all. I think the vertical stripe sweater looks great on you! I also featured vertical stripes linen pants on my post.

  7. The angle of a picture can really make a difference. The selfie is probably more of a reflection on how the sweater looks on you. I do think that not all stripes are created equal: I had a dress that I finally donated because the stripes didn't do me any favor but just thrifted one that is perfect and flattering. I am loving your new pants!

  8. Those linen pants do look amazing! Where did you order them from? he vertical stripes look so good on you! It's hard to find the right t-shirt, with the right weight, and the right width of stipe. I had a great one but it got a stain and I haven't found a replacement but when I do find one I like, I do use it a great deal.

    1. Believe it or not those linen pants came from Walmart; I saw them on Kellyann's https://www.thisblondesshoppingbag.com/ and decided to give them a try. I love them so much I'm debating about going back and buying them in the black with white stripe too.

  11. My favorite way to wear a horizontally striped top/sweater is with a scarf to break up the stripes, and in cooler weather, layering an open cardigan/jacket over it is also a nice option. In warm weather, a long necklace can also help create some verticality. I really like vertical stripes, and both your sweater and new pants are cute.

  12. Oh là là, I love the white and black sweater. That touch of pink really pops, very chic.

  13. I love the stripes! They look great on you!

  14. I prefer larger bands of stripes (if that makes any sense)...although I do have a pink & red stripe t-shirt that I think looks okay on me. For some crazy reason I'm drawn to red....and it looks horrible on me! Yet I gravitate towards it every time...lol. Being of Scottish descent red washes me out...my colours tend to be greens, browns, oranges...any of those in stripes I'd love!!

    1. I do like wide stripes better too; so it's funny that many of my striped clothes are with thinner stripes.

  15. I don't agree that the stripes aren't flattering in you. Flattering is an interesting word for fashion. I wish we could think more about having fun with our style.
For your photos think it's more how you are angled in the selfie and straight on in the other photos.
It's not the shirt, just the pose!!

  17. I think you look fabulous in all three iterations of stripes. But, when you don't feel like you do, you just don't. I love those striped pants! I loved them on Kellyann, too!

  20. I love the stripes! I think stripes are classic so you definitely can't go wrong plus visually they allow your eyes to see the stripes first not any imperfections. I like the pants you chose with stripes, those look great as well as the shirt. They look classic and of course trendy!

  21. All of your looks include wardrobe staples that are great for more than one season. I like how you styled your striped looks.

  22. You look amazing - horizontal or vertical. Such cute striped pieces. I keep eyeing some linen-y striped wide leg pants at Old Navy. Very similar to yours. Where did you find yours? Do they wrinkle much? Love the dressy comfort of that look. And that striped tee is adorable with it's pink band at the waist. I remember thinking I could never wear stripes...years ago when they would have been much more flattering on me. But now I am embracing just about anything. Ha!! Being 66 years old is somewhat freeing!! Big hugs to you.

    1. Aw, thank you! I got those stiped linen pants through Walmart online. I didn't feel like they wrinkled much at all after a day of use.
