Maple Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars

We were having some friends over and I wanted to try a new variation to chocolate chip cookie bars.  While I'm not usually a huge fan of maple syrup, I do like the maple flavoring in my baked goods so I tried making maple chocolate chip cookie bars instead. While the maple flavor was very subtle, my family could tell that there was something just a bit different about these chocolate chip cookies bars.

We all loved them and they were gone in no time!

Ingredients:

2 3/4 cups flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 1/2 tsp. salt

1 cup butter, melted

1 cup maple syrup

1 1/4 cups brown sugar

2 large eggs

2 tsp maple extract (or extract of your choice)

2 cups chocolate chips; divided

Steps:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Combine flour, baking soda and salt in large bowl then set aside.

2. In another bowl melt the butter and add in sugar & maple syrup; whisking until well combined.  Add in eggs and extract again whisking until well combined.

3. Pour butter/sugar mixture into the flour and fold together until you have a uniform batter.  Batter should be smooth and a light golden brown.

4. Add in 1 1/2 cups chips.  Line a 8x 11.5 x2 (2 quart rectangular) baking dish with parchment paper and spread batter out evenly.  Top with remaining 1/2 cup chips.

5. Bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees or until toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean (though you may have melted chocolate on it).  Set the bars aside to cool

6. Cut into squares and enjoy!

  1. Adding some chocolate chips on top is a good idea as it enhances the look of the bars. I also like how thick and chewy they look. I wonder if the maple syrup played a role in the consistency of them? If so, it looks like it was a very positive addition.

  8. Those look delicious, Joanne! I love real maple syrup on pancakes and waffles. I don't think I'd ever thought of adding it to anything else!

    1. I don't think I have ever eaten maple syrup (real or "fake") on my pancakes or waffles! I just really do not like the taste of it.

  9. I am not a fan of maple syrup on say pancakes -- maybe I just don't like pancakes lol. But I do like it in baked goods, a recipe for a meat marinade, and even a way to sweeten my coffee.
