Mid-Coast, Maine Getaway Weekend: Recap #3

Sunday was our third day in Edgecomb and we elected to skip the complimentary continental breakfast at the hotel to head up to Camden, Maine.  Along the way we stopped at Moody's Diner.  Not knowing it is a long standing national icon serving customers for over 90 years I didn't snap a photo, but I did have a yummy chocolate chip pancake to fuel up for our day of hiking.

We were heading to Mount Battie to hike a trail listed as "hard" on Alltrails.  It is a short trail; usually hiked in an hour but it is steep.

This is the only photo of the trail I snapped as shortly after this I was using both hands to climb up...

However, along the way there were little lookouts and the views were incredible.  These photos don't do it justice since it was a cloudy morning.

You can see the entirety of the town of Camden nestled in the cove

There is a parking lot where you can drive up if you don't want to attempt the hike and at the very top is a lookout tower.

Looking off in the other direction to the rest of the mountains in the range

Edna Saint- Vincent Millay has a poem about this very area (and there was a neat plaque about it near the base of the tower).

We found a different trail down the mountain that necessitated us walking back to our car along the side of the road but I was just fine with that as I wanted nothing to do with climbing back down the steep trail. (I am a wuss with a massive fear of heights).

Once we arrived back at our car we drove closer to the center of Camden and walked around the charming town.  We checked out the boats in the harbor and ate lunch at Sea Dog Brewing Company

Much of this town is set above the water!

From the harbor we could just make out the tower we had been standing on.. do you see it? In this photos it is just slightly left of the big orange tree.

There were some incredible gifts and unique items in the stores... but we only window shopped.

I ordered clam chowder and coconut shrimp.

We were back at the hotel mid-afternoon and ended up taking naps.  We went out for ice cream at Blanchard's again for our "dinner" (they were out of cookies this time!).  Then watched the sunset from our balcony and turned in early.

It was such a good thing we did too as we were woken early the next morning... we could smell something burning.  So around 4/4:30 we were up and getting dressed and packing our bags.  Then our heat kicked on and the smell got so much worse!  We turned off the heat and took our bags out to the car.

We vacated the room at 5 and went looking for staff to report to... only no one was there! The lights were off and the front desk room was locked up tight.  We tried unsuccessfully to call the few numbers we could find when my husband decided to venture back into our room and look through the guidebook they provided.  He found an after hours number to call and got an answering service.

We sat in our car with the heater going debating about what to do.. it seemed silly to call 911 when we couldn't see any smoke or fire but we knew we just couldn't ignore the odor.  by 5:30 we got a call back from maintenance who offered to bring us a space heater.  We declined and when asked if they could do anything to help my husband pointed out that someone might want to check out the cause of the odor since other people were staying in the Inn too and it would be awful if there was a fire they neglected or the odor was caused by something toxic.  We turned our key in to the maintenance guy when he showed up and hoped that we were all set for check out...

So 5:30 found us driving to Freeport and looking for breakfast options early on a Monday morning.  We stopped at the Sunrise Cafe (a place we've eaten at before) and then napped in the LL bean parking lot until 9 when most of the outlet stores began opening up for the day.  We shopped for a couple of hours and then stopped at the Maine Diner on our way home.

Photo taken on our last Maine trip; as I forgot to take any photos this final day of our trip!

We enjoyed the lobster pie and my husband got what they call the 3 D's meal-- the meal that was served on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.  It was pretty good but so incredibly filling that neither of us ate for the rest of the day.

We did groceries on our way home and I cooked a quick, easy spaghetti meal for the boys for their dinner. We all sat at the table and got caught up on our weekend, the boys gave their dad his father's day gifts (Twizzlers and a Carhartt shirt), then we watched 2 episodes of Friends).

It was a rather weird last day of vacation but we did have a great trip and now have a "fun" story to tell!

Though despite trying to call the Inn and even sending an email I never managed to talk to a single person after leaving our key with the maintenance guy!

    1. Yes, we have thought of planning vacations around DDD places too but, honestly, I just haven't been wowed by any of the ones we have tried.

  2. Thanks for taking us along on your trip! I really liked reading the poem about the area. It's simple but beautiful. Poetry, hiking and mountain views? Yes, please! I forgot to add lobster- I am ready to go to Maine!! Congrats on completing the steep hike. Smelling something burning must have been disconcerting- you definitely have a story to tell. It sounds like everything ended up being ok?

    1. We really did like Seadog a lot and in warm weather their back deck overlooks the harbor.

  6. I dislike inns that have no one working at night at the front desk. I know it is cost saving but it does not seem safe to me. The burning smell sounded worrisome--I read stories about people dying of carbon monoxide in hotels as pool heaters or heaters malfunctioned. Camden did look pretty! I was surprised to see houses on stilts! I loved reading Millay's poem and seeing the same view that inspired her.

    1. We actually Googled if it was even legal to have no one working (or on the premises!) at night. I have never stayed somewhere where there wasn't staff on site 24 hours a day! I did not like that feeling at all.

  7. It sounds like y'all had an exciting morning smelling something burning. I'm glad nothing materialized from that, that you know of anyhow. We spent two weeks in Maine last month. This was our 4th time to vacation in the state and we had a great time. While in southern Maine, we ate at the Maine Diner for breakfast. Later in our vacation while in Acadia, we drove to Camden for the day and being so close to Moody's, we went there for an early dinner. We'd love to go back next year if we can swing it but vacationing is so expensive. If only money wasn't a problem, huh? I'm sharing our vacation memories on Wednesdays. Have a wonderful week!

  12. That is so strange about the heating odor, the maintenance guy and your "check out." I'm glad you were ok, but hate thinking about the possible danger for the rest of the inn!

  13. So you never heard what it was?? How wild. I love those steep trails because it's such a challenge,

  14. Gosh, I've never been to a hotel (that I know of) where there wasn't someone on the desk 24/7. I do hope nothing came of the odor. Kudos to you for staying to make sure someone was alerted to it! And, I am with you on not wanting to walk down a steep hill. I don't mind going up, but going down can be tricky if you just trip a bit. This seemed like quite a wonderful mini vacation, Joanne!

    1. We've eaten at Bob's Clam Hut in Maine which was also on DDD and nearly stopped there on this trip on day 1 but the line was really long.
