What's Up Wednesday: Happy Thanksgiving!

It's the last Wednesday of the month which means it's time for What's Up Wednesday with Sheaffer & Shay.  We're cleaning and baking and getting all ready for Thanksgiving tomorrow so my wrap up of the month is going to be quick.
What We're Eating This Week: I'll be sharing our full monthly menu next week but this week we have been eating easy to prep foods like frozen ravioli and sauce with green beans as we get ready for Thanksgiving!!

I'll be hosting again this year and we plan to make roasted turkey, gravy, our favorite mashed potato recipe, butternut squash, green bean casserole, steamed broccoli, my favorite bread stuffing, and both apple pie and chocolate chip pecan pie.

My husband and I are also excited to eat our favorite leftover turkey pie when we decorate our tree on Friday.

What I'm Reminiscing About: When my boys were little we used to spend the whole MONTH of December having fun baking and crafting and watching holiday movies together every single day.  Our schooling consisted of reading Christmas stories, learning about Christmas traditions and making crafts/ornaments for family and friends.  We'd bake enough treats through the month that each of our family members would get cookie tins of baked goods from us.

"painting" sugar cookies (with evaporated milk mixed with food coloring)

Grinch punch and Grinch cookies to go with our movie

Working on our Elf glyphs

Making melted pony bead ornaments

Painting clay ornaments

Wrapping our ornaments

What I'm Loving: The beautiful skies-- sunrises and sunsets are so pretty this time of year.

What We've Been Up To:  Lots and lots of hiking! We've been hiking about an hour most days.

What I'm Dreading:  Ice and snow... I hate icy roads in the morning and icy walkways.  (it does look pretty though!)

What I'm Working On: My healthy eating habits!  With Weight Watcher's new plan rolling out earlier this month I've been refocused on healthy eating (more veggies, whole grains and water)

What I'm Excited About: My Christmas cards are done and ready to be mailed, I have 95% of my gifts bought an wrapped already and I am feeling on top of my to do list!

What I'm Watching/Reading: We went to the movies to see Ghostbusters: Afterlife and I thought it was a pretty good storyline.  I've also been watching some holiday movies on Netflix and Hulu and enjoyed Lovehard, The Holiday (which I watch every year!).

I've read 13 books this November and have been sprinkling in some wonderful Christmas stories too. My full round up will be on the blog this coming Monday.

What I'm Listening to: The birds at our feeder; they're surprisingly loud for such little creatures.

What I'm Wearing: Lots of warm layers! Our weather is getting pretty cold with highs in the upper 40's so I tend to wear lots of layers.

What I'm Doing This Weekend: Decorating for Christmas!  We always plan the two days after Thanksgiving for decking the halls.

What I'm Looking Forward to Next Month: All the Christmas fun- parties, and baking, and wrapping gifts.

What Else is New: We got Ian all signed up for starting college full time this spring semester!  It's going to be so weird only having 1 child at home to teach.

The run up to Christmas used to be such fun when my girls were little. They're not so much into baking and crafting now. Hmmf. x

    1. Yeah, I enjoy holidays with my boys but they are definitely not the same now that no one wants to craft or really get into the Christmas spirit anymore.

  8. Leftover turkey pie sounds really good. We make cookies like that with my mom each year. I can't wait to do that with my girls at my parents house!

  9. Love the throwback photos! Question, do you do the milk/food coloring glaze before or after baking? Those look like stained glass, and I'd like to know the details!

Your outfits are very cute, and your meals look very satisfying and nourishing.

    1. We do the milk/food coloring before baking. We make up our sugar cookies, roll them out, "paint" them and then bake according to the recipe instructions.

  12. Hello Joanne,
I think it's especially great that you have such fond memories of the time when your boys were little. All of the cookie-making and crafting activities are wonderful Christmas memories and such traditions should be preserved. Maybe one day with grandchildren :-) The landscape with the wonderful light and foggy moods and the photos of your hikes are fabulous . Healthy eating fits this lifestyle. A question: On the plate with the tomatoes and eggs are small deep-fried (?) "Rolls" ... What is that? Your outfits in warm layers are well chosen at these temperatures. I especially like the poncho and the Icelandic or Norwegian sweater, so nice!
    Happy Thanksgiving!
    Warm greetings to you,
from the new grandma Traude 😊👶🏼👵🏻

    1. I found those on Amazon they are called Spudsy sweet potato puffs (they are churro flavored) and the packaging claims "baked and never fried." They are perfect for when I want a sweet, crunchy snack.

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
