Touring Fort Fisher

One rainy morning while we were on vacation in North Carolina we were completely stuck for ideas on what to do; after discovering that the aquarium was sold out of tickets we decided to check out  Fort Fisher.

We headed right through the building and out onto the grounds; hoping we could beat the rain.

There were plaques set up all along the pathway that taught us all about the history of this fort which was used a lot during the Civil war.

As much as we liked seeing the parts of the fort we were equally entertained checking out the local trees, crabs, flowers, and marshes nearby.

We could not believe that these trees had crabs crawling on them.

It did sprinkle on and off while we were outside but not enough to really get us wet.  We then took another 20 or minutes to browse around inside the fort.  There were a lot of items on display and tons of signs all around giving lots of history of the area.

I didn't take any photos inside though since it was quite dark and small.  If you're a history buff it is a really cute museum to check out if you happen to be in the area.

  3. I do love visiting historical places and trying to imagine the who and whys of the era it is from.
I wonder what the crabs find to eat on the tree trunks? Maybe ants or other bugs?

    1. It would be wonderful to visit in the fall; after tourist season. But I recommend going on a sunny day as there was more of the outside fort across the street on the beach side we didn't get to since it started raining.
