10 on the 10th; June 2021

Tomorrow is the 10th which means it's almost time to link up with Leslie for her 10 on the 10th.  This month our focus is all about summer; my favorite season!  Living on the lake we tend to have a very laid back attitude about summer and take pride in filling our days with simple pleasures.

  1. What will make summer successful for you this year? Any successful summer is one that is filled with lots of days by the lake, good books, plenty of family time, and delicious treats.

  1. “500 Days of Summer,” “School’s Out for Summer,” somersault, “The Boys of Summer,” “Summertime Blues,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” dog days of summer, “Endless Summer,” “Summertime and the Living is Easy”…which of these phrases resonates most with you and your plans for the summer of ’21 and why? School's out for the summer resonates the most with me because there were many summers where we did homeschool year round when our boys were younger.  Plus with one boy in public school this year trying to navigate all these changes in hybrid/ virtual learning was quite stressful and I am so happy to see school ending next week!

  1. What do you look forward to doing this summer that you couldn’t do last summer because of C-O-V-I-D? What plans did you have last summer that had to be postponed, altered or canceled all together? I don't think our plans will be any different this year; nothing much changed for our family over the summer last year since many of the restrictions had lifted temporarily for the summer here and we don't typically do much in the summer besides having friends and family over.  I like to focus on simple pleasures in the summer-- reading, swimming,

Family photo from many years ago-- my younger two are in the front row with goggles on their heads

  1. Name something you will track this summer. Steps, calories, Weight Watcher points, money spent, books read, miles traveled, workout sessions, laps swam, miles run, gatherings with friends.  How will you track it? I am still tracking all my food on Weight Watchers and all the exercises I do each day using my WW App.  I also track my books read and time spend with friends through my blog.

  1. Is there something new you look forward to trying this season? New recipe, new ‘do, new restaurant, new vacation spot? Funny enough this is one of our first summers ever that we are taking a family vacation (we have taken a vacation as a family each year but always in the off season).  Travelling during peak travel times will be something quite new to us.  I also know we'll be trying plenty of new recipes and restaurants too.
Our first time eating sundaes at Bogeys

  1. Share something you do on repeat every summer. Why is this activity on repeat?  Were you able to do that familiar activity last year during the pandemic? Every summer we kayak, swim in the lake, go boating and tubing, and have a huge 4th of July party with the whole family at the cottage.  We were able to do all of that last year and have plans in the works for it all again this year.

  1. Who will you connect with or reconnect with this summer? Summertime is when we see a lot of our friends that we don't always get to see during the school year.  Plus this summer we're taking a trip down to see my sister and her family; we just can't wait!

  1. This season how will you manage screen time for yourself and your family? I really don't have many rules about screen time for myself or my family when summer hits.  I tend to spend more time outside reading, kayaking, and visiting that I don't worry much about those days we don't.

  1. What project are you hoping to tackle this summer?  Something around the house?  A craft?  A gardening or outdoor activity? I usually don't tackle any projects in the summer but would like to try and get the dock and our front stoop repainted as the paint is peeling off in those two places from when I painted them 2 years ago.

  1. How do you want to feel at the end of the summer? I want to feel well- rested and ready to tackle another year of schooling.  This fall I have one returning to public school, one starting a college course (and doing some homeschooling on the side), as well as homeschooling one boy-- so yep, rested is my goal.

So you've got me questioning - I've wanted to paint our front door - but yours is peeling already? Do you recommend painting it - or maybe we shouldnt?

    1. Our door has held up beautifully. I painted the actual cement of our door step and that is where the paint started flaking off. I would definitely say go for it!

  8. I love these 10 on the 10th series. It seems weird reading about summer when we're in winter - and have just had our first cold snap (not that it was cold by your standards, but was for ours). I admire you tracking your WW points. Looking forward to seeing your vacation pics.

  13. We homeschool too! I am doing year round homeschool this year - it is our first year doing it (my son is in Kindergarten) and I feel like it would work well for us. I am not sure if we will do it all year every year though, we are still learning as we are going. :)

Life on the lake must be so nice! I would be out there everyday, as I am sure that you are!

    1. I found that every single year and season of homeschooling changed for us and I loved that I had the flexibility to do that! We often spent summer with hands on science projects, art projects, and field trips while the more traditional times of year focused more on more traditional school/book subjects.

  19. This was really fun and interesting to read, Joanne. I love your approach to summertime as a time for rest, recreation, and relaxation. The one thing I am looking forward to is our camping trip this weekend. We are taking the kids to their very first music festival! Happy summer, my friend!

    1. Camping is probably the only simple pleasure I'm not into! LOL. We camped a lot as a kid and tried it once with our boys but it is just not for me. Enjoy your trip with the kids; I hope the festival is fantastic and the weather is perfect for you.

  20. Wishing you all the lakeside reading, afternoons kayaking, swimming, floating, and lots of treats!! Hope this summer is one of your best yet. You were fortunate that last summer was pretty normal as I think for most of us it was anything bet. Glad you will be able to see your sister and her family. Hope by August you are rested and ready to start the new school year.
