Things I've Been Watching Lately

I found so many great things to watch these past two months!  A few have been recommended to me by other boggers, and a few we stumbled upon ourselves. A few I have been dying to watch for ages but wanted to watch from the beginning of the series and I had to be patient...

1. Ugly Betty (Hulu)-- Betty doesn't exactly fit in in the world of high fashion but she really wants this job at Mode Magazine. Between juggling the demands of her unconventional boss, helping out her family, and ignoring the not so subtle ribbing from all the other secretaries and assistants at the magazine her life is often a mess. I find it to be both funny and endearing.

2. Firefly Lane (Netflix)-- I'm enjoying seeing Kristin Hannah's book come to life.  It has been long enough since I read the actual book that I only remember a bit about it but I am really enjoying this series about these two best friends.

3. Call Me Cat (Hulu)-- My son was the one to tell me about this show.  It's pretty cute.  Kat quits her high powered job to open a cat cafĂ©.  She's quirky and awkward and often breaks the third wall to talk directly to the viewer.

4. Kim's Convenience (Netflix)-- The Kim family runs a convenience store in Toronto Canada.  Their daughter Janet is in art school and is often annoyed by her family's old fashioned values.  Appa and Umma pressure Janet to get a boy friend and hope that she will one day take over the family store. This Quirky family is easy to fall in love with.

5. The Repair Shop (Netflix)-- A reality based show where a bunch of artisans in Britain work together to restore priceless family heirlooms.  It is amazing to see the before and after transformations.

6. Halt and Catch Fire (Netflix)-- If you enjoyed Mad Men, I bet you would really enjoy this show!  Set in the early 80's just as the personal computer is about to take over this trio of unlikely "friends" works together to build the first portable computer.  With lots of drama, some backstabbing, and millions of setbacks it kept me on the edge of my seat. The show then follows their lives for the next 10 or more years and all the things they had a hand in creating.

7. Reba (Hulu)-- We have been looking for a family show to watch together.  My husband and I thought the boys might enjoy watching Reba.  So far they are!

8. Red Oaks (Amazon)-- Set in the mid 80's at a posh country club in New Jersey, David is working as an assistant tennis pro to make money for his next year of school at NYU hoping to save up enough to live in the city. His father is pushing him to become a CPA, his girlfriend is pushing him to get their own place and talking about their future, while everyone he meets at the club all seem to have suggestions about what he should do with his life. We watched the whole series in no time!

9.  Mad About You Reboot (Amazon)-- I used to watch Mad About you and was pretty excited to see a reboot on Amazon.  The storyline picks up many years later as Mable is setting off for college.  Jamie is struggling to let go of her only daughter while also dealing with the throws of menopause. Paul is trying to support both Jamie and Mable and loveable characters like Ira, Mark, and Lisa all make appearances.

10.  Modern Family (Hulu)--  had been wanting to watch Modern Family for the last few years but refused to start watching with just the last couple of seasons so I was THRILLED to see that Hulu had ALL the seasons available this month.  I began watching season 1 episode 1 and am already well into season 2 by now.  I love it!

 11. Greenland--
We rented the movie through our TV.  My husband and I enjoy most end of the world movies and this one reminded me of a cross between Armageddon and 2012.

12.  Armageddon-- We watched this old favorite on the Roku channel.  It's still my favorite end of the world movie.

13.  To All The Boys I've Loved Part 3; Always and Forever-- Having read the whole series and watched the other two movies I was so excited to see part 3 on Netflix!

    1. I read the book so long ago I only vaguely remember what it was about; which I think is actually a good thing or else I'd be criticizing how different it is, I'm sure.

  6. Loved watching Reba, not only is she a terrific singer but a funny actress too! Enjoy seeing Steve Howey on Shameless, although it's not exactly a family friendly show!

    2. That's one of the few shows that hubby and I watch together. I hear this is its last season. Thinking maybe I'll watch a few episodes of the British version and see how they compare.

  8. I loved Mad About You when it was first on, but I hate watching a reboot without watching the original. It's on the binging agenda, lol, but right now I'm working my way through The Office. I watched it when it first started but I never finished it. Eric and I are also watching Succession on HBO and it's so good. Very topical.

  9. Oh my gosh, I didn't realize there was a Mad About You reboot! I was a little young for Must See TV, but I definitely remember the hype around it. And I feel like naming her "Mable" was a very controversial/unpopular choice at the time! haha

  10. I appreciate this post. Had watched the first episode Call Me Cat and liked it. Need to watch it again. The repair show sounds like something PC and I both would like, and Halt and Catch Fire, too. I have ironing to do today so need to watch Firefly Lane while I get it done. I liked the book but have forgotten most of the story line, too. Thank you for these suggestions.

  11. Oooh, Joanne, you have some good ones here that seem really interesting! I think I might really enjoy Call Me Kat, Red Oaks, and Mad About You Reboot. I completely binge watched Firefly Lane in like 2 or 3 days. It was so good! I also love Reba. It's always a good classic fall back when I can't find anything on television. Thanks for linking up!
