Friday Favorites: Shelter in Place Week #3
We had some pretty cold and nasty weather this week but we still managed to get outside most days; wandering out longer on those days that were sunny and not so cold. We're flying through our schoolwork now and the boys only have 2 or subjects each most days since we keep setting those subjects aside that we've finished up.
The boys finished up their schoolwork so early on Friday that we went on our hike before lunch. It was sunny and in the 50's and we found a completely deserted trail to hike.
After lunch Evan and I put on our flip flops and walked up to get the mail. I could have happily walked around outside all afternoon. I finished up my puzzle while Ian headed off to work. He was helping to clear brush/ trees.
I spent part of my morning Saturday putting together a simple keychain using the Cricut and some faux leather. I also spent a good hour on the phone with my mom catching up. After lunch my husband and I went to Bj's and were able to get our freezer pretty well stocked. Then after dinner I used some hair clippers to give him a buzz cut... let's just say his hair dresser has nothing to worry about when all this is up. I am no hair stylist.
Sunday morning my husband and I headed out to check on his hydro plant and rake the grates since it was raining. Ian headed off to work routing edges for the picnic tables. Once we got home mid-morning we dropped the younger two boys off to paint the boards; all three worked until lunchtime to get all the boards painted.
I worked on a project in my craftroom most of the day and only managed to get it 1/2 done; so far I am loving it!
On Monday Alec finished up all his schoolwork for the year and we talked about how he's going to be filling his days from now on. I'd like to see him still working on Duolingo and I know he'll be reading but we were trying to brainstorm ideas to keep reviewing math without going on or having to buy yet another book.
Ian and Evan worked on their schoolwork too and when everyone was done we worked together to clean the whole upstairs. I talked to them about the importance of cleaning things we touch often like remote controls, light switches, and doorknobs. After lunch Ian headed to work and the younger boys hunkered down with their video games.
We snuck out for a quick 30- 45 minute walk in the afternoon when the rain finally let up.
I woke to find a heron on our shore Tuesday morning. Typically I can't snap a photo fast enough but this day the bird was standing so still.
We finished up our schoolwork quickly and my mother in law offered to pick up Dunkin Donuts egg sandwiches for the boys for their lunch. She also dropped off some packs of Harry Potter jelly beans she had picked up for our trip back in February (that we postponed and have since canceled).
The younger boys and I headed out for a brisk 20 minute while Ian went out on his 4-wheeler. Around 1 o'clock the boys were all picked up and headed back to the woodworking shop to paint the rest of the boards for the picnic tables. It was so weird being home for nearly 3 hours by myself!
Ian wanted to start work on his schooling bright and early Wednesday morning so he could head off to work. He was showing his grandmother how to use her new battery operated chainsaw and then was supposed to be spending his afternoon moving furniture... which didn't end up happening.
While he worked on his schooling I threw together some chocolate chip muffins for our breakfast.
When they were finished baking, the other boys started school too. We finished up quickly and then all worked on cleaning a bathroom. We discussed how to fill our days now that we're almost done all our schoolwork and I think we have a pretty good plan in pace. I'll share that here on Wednesday so make sure you come back to check it out.
The boys were done school incredibly early on Thursday... like an hour after we started kind of early. They went outside for a bit before it started raining. I put together some chili in our crock pot and then we made some white chocolate covered popcorn (which actually was more lavender since we combined purple and white chocolate melts) to enjoy while watching our movie for the afternoon.

DeleteI am loving empty trails for walking with my boys these days, too! And I am loving how diligently your boys are doing their schoolwork at home. My boys have downright uncooperative with this homeschooling business! But we shall prevail.

Well, we've been homeschooling for 8 years now so you can't compare my ending to your beginning... And as much as I would never say schoolwork isn't important I don't think it's the most important thing right now. Even with my boys I am focusing more on their mental and physical health than the actual bookwork.
DeleteI wish we had empty trails here. We live in suburban Chicago so finding empty places to walk is sometimes challenging. The forest preserves are packed with people but we still manage to create six feet barriers. Yesterday it was 60 and sunny, so we worked in our yard all day. It was GLORIOUS.
ReplyDeleteI am having a hard time keeping Ellie on task with homeschool. I think it's because her older sister is home from college and she senses my anxiety with everything going on. Sigh. I am envious of how focused you are at homeschooling.
Well... other than a few warm and sunny days here and there it has been pretty cold, rainy, and windy so I don't think a lot of souls are braving the trails. We also have lots and lots of places to go hiking and I'm trying to stick to more of the out of the way places that might not be as well known.
DeleteIt took us years to get this focused on homeschooling and honestly I think we're only doing so well because of my boys ages and their push to complete their work. I am trying my best to shield them from my anxiety but it's not always easy and, of course, they hear updates about what's going on from their friends and other family members.
I've been doing puzzles as well while home. We've managed walks around the neighborhood, but the weather hasn't been super cooperative for hikes. That heron pic is beautiful! And I am loving those roses that you are making. So creative! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's been pretty darn cold and rainy this week and I was so bummed to have to drag our winter coats back out... but even then I tried my best to get us outside if even for only 15-20 minutes.

ReplyDeleteThe popcorn was delicious (so much so that the whole batch is gone!). I love watching the heron when he's hunting... we haven't seen him again since so I'm doubly glad I was able to snap those photos when I did.

DeleteGreat job on getting the school work done. I decided to to the opposite and make school stretch out a bit so we have a routine to our days. They are only doing about two hours a day and will be done by mid May.
