Coastal Themed Welcome Sign

I'm linking up with a group of bloggers today for a coastal themed craft.  At first I wasn't sure I was going to participate since we don't live near the ocean and it's just not warm enough to have me thinking of beach trips and summertime just yet.

However, my sister and her husband are about to close on their new home and I thought a coastal themed sign for their new home would be perfect!

I don't know if anyone else associates hydrangeas with the ocean but here in New England just about every home along the water is surrounded with beautiful blue hydrangeas and they are one of the first things I think of when I picture living near the shoreline.

I started with a very light blue wash over the slate tile.  Then I used my hydrangea stamp set from Stampin' Up with some acrylic paints to get the general idea of where I wanted my leaves and flowers.  I stamped the leaves but once I began stamping the flowers I decided to swap to a brush and just hand paint everything.

I started with the basic shapes in dark and light shades of blue.

Then started adding in actual petals and flowers.  Using the backside of the brush I made a dot in the center of each flower.

I decided to add in more leaves and a few stringy vines to fill out the corner more.  I really hope my sister and her family like it!

I used a pencil to sketch the welcome in an arch; trying to match the curve of the slate tile.

Make sure you stop by and see what all the other co-hosts are sharing today too.

    1. That’s a combination of ‘must visit the coast’ and ‘clearly do not visit the coast’ 🤦‍♀️

    2. LOL. I always feel like I must visit the coast more... but I seem to be the only one in this house that feels that way.

  9. It's beautiful! Funny, I don't often think of hydrangeas as coastal, but beachy/coastal to me is also more lake life in my mind than ocean (since that is the water I grew up on). And we do have lots of beautiful hydrangeas there!

    1. We actually live on a lake but I definitely think of the ocean and the crashing of the waves when I hear coastal.
