Weekend Trip to Cape Cod and Nantucket-- Day 1

My husband and I took off for a late birthday celebration for a weekend away at Cape Cod and Nantucket.  I have wanted to visit Nantucket for a few years now and was so excited that we were finally going!

On a good day we can get to the cape in about 2 hours.  We were heading to West Yarmouth/ Hyannis area which is almost mid way on the cape and takes about 2 1/2 hours.  However, with summer traffic it took us closer to 3 - 3 1/2 hours.

We stopped for a quick bathroom break along the canal and watched a huge tug boat coming through.

We were headed for that bridge in the distance; there are only two bridges that connect Cape Cod to mainland Massachusetts and today our GPS was taking us over the Sagamore.  (The other is the Bourne bridge)

Once "on Cape" we located our hotel for the night and got checked in; our room wasn't ready though so we drove to where we'd be picking up the ferry to Nantucket the next morning and parked nearby to explore the town of Hyannis.  We've been a few times but I love all these seaside towns up and down the whole cape.  They are all so darn cute!

Hyannis was decked out with sails and boats and hosting it's annual craft fair.  We walked Main street and thankfully there were lots of trees for shade and a coolish breeze coming off the water.

We decided to stop for lunch at Fresh Ketch (which I forgot to take any photos of!).. we elected to eat inside since it was 91 and according to my phone felt like 106.  Yep, our two day vacation was right in the middle of a major heat wave!

We HAD to get seafood for lunch; you can't get much fresher than seafood on the shore.  I had a fried cod sandwich with french fries and my husband got a lobster roll.  They were SO SO good!

After lunch we walked around a bit more and walked in and out of the air conditioned stores.  Once we had walked both sides of main street we decided to walk down to the ferry terminal and see where to pick up our tickets.   We stopped in the shade near the marina to drink another bottle of water and enjoy the cool ocean breeze.

They have these cute little artist cottages set up along the waterfront filled with local artists and their works.  They looked so cute but I was just getting too hot.  I asked if we could walk back to the car and go check out some shopping in nice cool air conditioning!

Our first stop was at this fancy looking Christmas Tree Shops.  The Cape has many of these stores scattered throughout and they are all fairly large and neat to walk through.  You just never know what you might find.  On this day we bought 2 more waters and a 2020 wall calendar (yep, big spenders I know!).

We headed over to the Cape Cod Mall after and spent the afternoon walking around.  We did buy a few more things and had fun just walking and browsing.  By the time we finished up and headed back to our hotel we decided to shower and head to dinner.

We found the BEST Italian food place right near our hotel-- DiParma! (again no photos of the place or the food!! #Bloggerfail!).  Our food was amazing and the portion sizes were huge.  I ordered a chicken and eggplant parm. combo and my husband got a trio of meatballs, chicken parm., and fettuccine Alfredo.   All meals come with a house salad and some freshly made garlic knots... I could have happily eaten just those two!

After dinner we were stuffed and the sun was setting so I wanted to find a little beach and go for a walk.  We headed to Seagull beach.  It was the perfect way to end our day!

There are some really beautiful houses along the shoreline all over the Cape.  I love the ones that have their own mini lighthouses!

Make sure to come back next weekend and read all about our day on Nantucket!

  1. Wow! How gorgeous. I would love to have a house with it's own little mini lighthouse. How adorable is that. What a lovely mini vacation. We are headed for Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire late this summer. Can't wait.

  3. I'm so jealous. I really really want to go to Nantucket. My college friend has a summer house on Cape Cod so I've been there a few times and it's such a great town.

  5. I used to love the Christmas Tree Shops!! Then they opened in NJ and it wasn't the same feel as the New England ones were. Those little artist houses are so cute, but too bad it was so hot out!
