Weekly Wrap- Up: Halloween Fun Week!

It has really been feeling like fall here this week and I am loving it!  We had some sunny skies and the colors are finally feeling like they are popping all around.  It's been a super busy week and while I don't feel like we got as much schoolwork done as I would have liked we did spend lots and lots of time outside and on the move so I can't complain.

The boys tackled a bit of schoolwork on Friday each working on some math, writing, and reading before we packed up lunches and headed out.  We went to Southwick's Zoo for their Zoo Boo days with the younger two boys in costumes for trick or treating.  We met up with some friends we hadn't seen in a long time and we spent a good 4 hours at the zoo walking around checking out the animals.  We arrived home just in time for dinner and my husband walked in with some flowers for me (that his uncle buys each year for all the women in the family).

Ian went to work on Saturday morning while my husband and I dragged the other two boys out to breakfast and shopping.  Alec really needed some winter gear and he's already outgrown the pants I bought him last month.  After shopping my husband dropped us off at home and the boys helped me in the kitchen.  We made tossed salad, cole slaw, Chex mix, and caramel popcorn. We used this recipe for the caramel corn and substituted mini Twix for the Rolo candies.

Ian headed off to work again on Sunday morning and spent most of the day running equipment.  I finished making my Christmas cards and the younger boys spent their morning playing board games like Sorry and Chess.  We all went for a nice hike in the woods before dinner and watched Ghostbusters for our family movie night.

We were supposed to meet up with a new tween/ teen hiking group on Monday but thunderstorms made it nearly impossible.  Just before our scheduled hike time the skies cleared up a bit so we decided to take a chance and we did have one other family that showed up.  Hopefully in the weeks that follow we'll manage a few more get togethers and we'll meet more kids my boys own ages.  After (and before) hiking the boys did get a full day of schoolwork in, helped clean the house, and even played a few games of chess.  Ian spent most of his afternoon out in the excavator digging holes and helping his grandfather.

Tuesday we had a full day of schooling planned.  Alec had karate so he tackled his work nice and early finishing most of it before we left the house.  Evan was thrilled we stopped at the library on the way home and he eagerly dug into reading the second book in his series.  Ian set off as soon as his schoolwork was done to work with the excavator and the other two boys helped clean the house instead.  Sometimes it's nice to have a quiet day at home.

We had a very shortened day of schoolwork on Wednesday since we were meeting some friends for a hike.  They recommended a completely new trail and we  had a wonderful time catching up with old friends.  We hiked for an hour and a half and then found a nearby park to go to and eat our lunches and visit some more.  The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day!  Just before dinner the younger two boys donned their costumes and we headed out to start our trick or treating rounds.  We went to both my mother in law's houses, my husband great aunt's house and then picked up pizza and headed to my mother's.  We ate dinner with my family and then the kids all went trick or treating throughout the whole neighborhood (and I mean the WHOLE neighborhood; we trick or treated for a good hour and a half!).

Thursday morning Ian had a physical appointment bright and early; I could not believe we were gone from home for 2 hours!  That made me feel behind all day and I didn't get as much done as I would have liked.  We tackled our schoolwork after the doctor's office and breakfast then Ian headed off to dig more holes with the excavator while the younger two boys and I finished up their schoolwork.  They all cleaned a bathroom in the house and after lunch we headed out to run errands.  One home we gathered leaves for a science experiment on chromatography that we started and plan to finish on Friday. The boys and I went for a short walk and went to check out some of the holes Ian has been digging.  I was pretty impressed that he is able to dig such accurate and neat holes!

It doesn't really look like it from this angle but this hole is just over 4 feet deep, wide, and long; a perfect cube.

How was your week?

    1. My husband ended up eating most of that popcorn by himself and he seems to keep oscillating between I'm never allowed to make it again and I must make it again real soon. LOL. It was very tasty!

    1. I finished making my Christmas cards but I do have to sign and address them all; that's always more of a chore since it's not as enjoyable as creating them.

    1. My middle son really wanted to learn and 1/2 taught himself 1/2 learned from my husband. He loved the game so much he taught his brothers and myself to play too so he always has someone to play with.
