TBB Asks-- Summer Vacation Q & A

It's the first Monday of the month and time once again to link up with The Blended Blog to answer some friendly questions about our summer vacations.

1. Will you go on a a summer vacation this year? No,typically we don't go anywhere on vacation in the summer since we live right on a lake.  We prefer to wait until everyone else's kids are back in school and take our family vacation in the fall or very early spring before schools let out.  There is nothing quite like visiting Sea World, Disney, or Universal and only having (at most!) a 15 minute wait in lines.  Our kids often get picked for things like the Wand Choosing ceremony or Jedi Training (which they signed up to do TWICE in one day!) simply because there are so few people around.

2. Do nothing but relax or a pack it all in vacation? Usually it's a pack it all in type of vacation but it was brought to my attention a few years ago that my boys and husband prefer a relaxing vacation so now we try to compromise and spend a bit of time doing both...

3. What month do you like to vacation? Any of them!  I'm up for a vacation whenever though we do tend to avoid peak travel times.  I do not like crowds.

4. Cruise: YES or NO? My husband and I cruised for our honeymoon and I LOVED it! I've always wanted to go back but we have yet to do that.

Even then I was awful about making sure we had a picture together!

5. Favorite vacation tradition? Hmm.. I'm not sure... I guess I'd have to say having my mother in law with us.  My mother in law has come on just about every family vacation we've had for the last 9 or 10 years.  We invited her to go with us the first time right after she lost her husband and we all enjoyed it so much that it's just kind of stuck. She was invaluable when the kids were younger and no one was big enough to ride any rides alone.  My boys can not imagine vacation without her; and honestly, neither could my husband or I.  We often got to feel like we had a mini honeymoon in the middle of our trips when she offered to watch them at nap time or take them for a night while we went out for dinner by ourselves.  Every year she asks if we still need or want her along and each time my boys enthusiastically answer "YES!"

6. Most memorable vacation? ALL of them!  Seriously we have memories from each of the vacations; some are so memorable because of all that went wrong (like ending up in the ER), some are so memorable for all the fun, and some are so memorable for what we got to see and do together.  There is no way I could pick one!  You can read a bit about each of the trips my husband and I have taken (with and without the family) up until the spring of 2016 here.

7. Pack light or Pack it all? I try to pack light and have gotten better over the years but I'm such a "just in case" or "what if" kind of person that I tend to end up packing it all.  In fact by the time we're coming home I am often putting some things in just about everyone else's suitcase!

8. Hotel, Condo or House? We've typically rented hotels rooms that are more like condos but have branched out in recent years to renting actual condos and houses.  With 5 people standard hotels rooms just don't work and we like having a kitchen to cook in so we're not eating out every meal.

The townhouse we rented in Florida last year
Dunes Village Resort in Myrtle Beach had two bedroom condos right on the beach with a water park!

9. Favorite thing(s) to eat on vacation? All the junk I try not to eat at home like french fries, ice cream, cheeseburgers and potato chips...  but mostly ice cream.

We loved this little ice cream shop in Maderia Beach, Florida!

10. Warm or Cold Destinations.  Warm, always warm!  Even if we visit places like Canada we make sure to go when we can wear shorts and t-shirts or tank tops.  I love my flip flops too much to leave them home.  Besides my boys are part fish and just love swimming so much.

  1. I'm with you on the warm weather locations! I'm jealous you can travel at off peak times. It is so much nicer that way!

    1. It really is! Lower costs, fewer crowds... it's one huge bonus of homeschooling that I always make sure to take advantage of.

  2. Such a good idea to wait on vacay when it’s not as crazy busy. What a gorgeous townhouse. You guys know how to vacation right!

    1. It really was amazing! Just a block walk straight out the front door to the beach and we had our own dock in the backyard looking out into the bay. Our first glimpse of dolphins in the while was from standing on our balconies.

  3. I wouldn't go anywhere if I lived on the lake either!!!! And I guess I didn't think about the beauty of homeschooling when I typed up my answers... it IS better to go on vacation when the rest of the world is back in school!!!

    1. My husband always jokes that we don't need a summer vacation because we live where people want to vacation. He isn't wrong. It can be hard to read and hear about everyone else's vacations but I always console myself with the thought that ours tend to be much less crowded and we can see and do all the same things.

  5. Living lakeside during the summertime sounds like a dream! And offseason is definitely the best time to travel to places that are usually crowded during the warmer months. We're looking forward to exploring Disney during their offseason to avoid the crowds as well.

    1. It's the best! Though I am hearing more and more that finding an "off" season at Disney is getting harder and harder to do.

  6. What a great idea waiting until school holidays are over! I hate it when places are too crowded! #coolmumclub

    1. Yeah, I have a very hard time dealing with crowds. People are great but get them together in a group and it seems like they/we all bring out the worst in each other.
