Top 14 of 2014
It was brought to my attention by a fellow blogger that I had failed to put together my top 10 posts of 2014. I decided to link up to my 14 most popular posts for 2014; the ones everyone has read and visited the most.
It's always neat to look back and see which posts struck a nerve with readers. I have to assume more people read certain posts because someone shared or commented on them and it got others interested in reading it. I get a kick out of seeing what was popular and trying to guess why.
Often I write this blog with no idea how it's going to turn out. I write this blog as a daily catalog/ online portfolio of our homeschooling journey. It helps me look back and see how far we've come, the many topics we've covered, and assures me that yes, they are learning! If it helps someone else that just makes it even better.
So from order of most to least popular here are the posts that must have spoken to my readers the most in 2014:
1. Heading Back to Homeschooling After a Long Break: I wrote a post back in February about getting back into a routine after taking a week or so off to just play and enjoy ourselves. I didn't see this post as anything more than just a running commentary of our day like usual. I can only assume the recipe for snow dough is what brought so many hits.
2. Finding Balance: This post was written around this time last year and it's all about my struggle to find a balance between schoolwork, house work, and "me" time. It's funny because we're struggling with this again! We lost our routine and I'm once again struggling to fit it all in and find a way to make it work. I guess I forgot I already had! Rereading this also reminded me that we need to write more Rebus stories.
3. Superhero Science-- A fun day of hands on learning where the boys had to brainstorm and try out different way to free their superhero characters from a block of ice.
4. Math Without Books-- This post was one giant brainstorm on ways to work on math skills with the boys without using traditional text books or worksheets.
5. St. Patrick's Day Arts and Crafts-- A day with a few different & fun arts and crafts projects themed around rainbows and pots of gold.
6. Bullseye and Other Games for Learning-- A day in the life post using games to teach math facts and sight words.
7. Bang! And Other Fun Games for Learning-- I'm starting to see a real pattern here with the games for learning. Guess I'm not the only one who isn't a huge fan of workbooks!
8. Icky, Rainy Mondays-- Homeschooling When You Have the Blahs-- A post about my struggle to find that happy homeschooling feeling and what we do when I really don't feel like teaching.
9. A Field Trip to the West Hartford Science Museum-- Our trip to the Connecticut Children's Museum in West Hartford.
10. Why I Don't Ask Comprehension Questions-- My views on reading comprehension and reading comprehension questions.
11. Just a Typical Homeschooling Day: 4th, 2nd, and Kindergarten Aged Boys. just a typical day in the life post where I outlined what we did throughout our typical day.
12. How Learning About The Various Homeschooling Methods Helped Ease My Fears-- A post about I was feeling like we were failing at unschooling; only to realize we weren't really an unschooling family.
13. The Camp that Never Was: Dealing with an Anxious Child-- an outline of the struggle we had with my oldest son when he had real difficulty separating from me this past summer.
14. What Unschooling Means to Us -- Was a summary of a typical day where I sat back and let the boys take the lead with their schooling. They get some prompting and coaching from me but they pick all the activities and often show me how they learn best.
