Making Painted Sugar Cookies

The boys had been begging to make and decorate sugar cookies and since I certainly had the time today seemed like a good day.  Using our favorite sugar cookie recipe (OK-- our favorite bag of sugar cookie mix that we add butter, flour and egg to) we got ready to make our cookies.



I opened a few cans of evaporated skim milk and divided the milk between a few small glass bowls (mugs work well too) and we added a few drops of food coloring making as many colors as we wanted.  Today we made red, yellow, green, blue and purple.
 
When I had all the trays filled with raw cookie shapes, all the sprinkles put out on the table, and all the colored milk paint ready to go with clean brushes I called them in and they happily set to work.  I love sharing this tradition with my boys that I remember doing with my family when I was a kid.  I made four trays this year so I sat with the kids and painted the cookies too.  It was fun and festive and a great way to start our day.

Once painted and decorated we just bake and cool as the package directions tell us.

    The boys did a great job with these cookies! This is my favorite holiday cookie, but for whatever reason I never seem to make them. Plus, I have always wanted to paint sugar cookies, and haven't done that either. My plan for this year is to spend more time doing things I enjoy, rather than spending all of my time cooking and cleaning for a big party. So, this year I decided to not host my big party and try to enjoy the holiday season. Hopefully, cookie baking will be in there somewhere. Great post!

      We stopped hosting a few years ago too; while I hated not being able to host I just needed a break and time to remember that the holidays were supposed to be fun. Hopefully you'll find some time for baking!

    Ah they look fab. We're rubbish at making biscuits. I always burn them. I mean the children only really like decorating them but it would be nice to be able to make some that look AND taste good. Thanks for joining us at #familyfun

      We often cheat and use the prepackaged cookies that we just have to roll out, cut, and bake. It's not often that I make them all from scratch; I"m not that great at making cookies either.

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. Highlights and Favorites Each Day in April

 Oh April... you were mostly a very stressful month with all sorts of not so fun problems (from Alec's struggles to get the classes he needs/any dorm room at all for next semester to a state tax audit to assorted family health and housing problems [none of the 5 of us living in the house but close family none the less]). Throw in some not so fun weather, like snow, and I was ready to throw in the towel completely by the 15th. That said most of these stressors were small and manageable and there really was some good to be found in every day even if I did have to dig a little deeper for it than normal. It sure did go out with a bang though! 1. So thankful for our generator; we needed it to cook dinner along with the grill. Up at nearly 2:30 am with my mind whirling about anything and everything, Evan found out his class was canceled after driving to school but we made the best of it and went hiking instead (after he picked me up). Prime Purchases in April 2025

 It's the first Monday of the month and time for Prime Purchases. I didn't buy all that much this month; just 2 orders!  My biggest purchases were Evan's textbooks for next year (which I'll share later in the spring when I show what he's studying for his senior year). I did order a few things for the rest of the family and bought a couple of "just for fun" stuff for me. My husband loves these click belts but his old one was all worn out so he asked me to get him another one.   I bought some of these large command hooks for Alec's dorm room for next year.  I was told we were out of these probiotics.   I bought myself this National Parks color by number book and this National Parks word search book.   And finally I bought myself these earrings- - I LOVE them! What I Read in April & Share Your Shelf #13

 Marilyn,   Jennifer,   Tanya,  and I are so happy to be hosting this monthly link up (that goes live on the first Thursday of every month) dedicated solely to books and book reviews. Through this link up I've gotten lots of great ideas on what books to read next! This seems to have been a month of books written in verse and a whole lot of middle grade/ young adult fiction at that but wow did I read some really powerful stories. I had no idea I would enjoy stories written in verse so much (in fact I often assumed I wouldn't like them and went out of my way NOT to read them).  I also lucked out that so many new books I've been anxiously waiting for came in at our local library and I've been reading up a storm.  1.
