Keeping Kids Occupied on Cold Winter Days

 I woke with a raging headache and laid in bed watching the snow falling and piling up.  I knew all the local schools had a snow day and I thought that sounded just great.

I quickly realized without turning on screens, the kids would be turning to me every 5-10 minutes for ideas on what to do so I turned to Pinterest and found some great activities to keep us busy today.



These are the ideas I came up with:

1.  Play in the snow-- we made some great snow castles with all our sand toys.

2.  Cook a nice big breakfast-- we made choc. chip pancakes and scrambled eggs,  Yummy!

3.  Abstract painting with finger paints on real canvas (Michael's had their 2 packs of canvas for 7.99 and they were buy one get one free so I got 4 for $8!)

4.  Making a town on a dollar store shower curtain. 

5.  Break out the craft and activity kits they got for Christmas

6.  Make Fake Snow dough, a differnt type of senenory dough, or bring in trays of snow from outside.

I ended up adding more corn starch so it wasn't so sticky and was more like regular dough

7.  Make snow Ice cream--  since they'll def. want to eat the ice cream dough and they can't. 

8.  Make Sharpie/ tie dye t-shirts.

9.  Make a blanket fort

10.  Eat lunch or dinner in the fort and listen to some books on Cd. 

I guess I needn't have worried.  They had a fun filled snow day playing outside all day long; even fighting with me about coming in for lunch.  They were soaked and I wanted them to at least dry off even if they didn't want to eat but it was a battle.   I was happy that for once they were arguing to stay outside instead of arguing to go outside.   As soon as they dried off they went right back out!

    Oh my word I have just followed your link to find out about snow ice cream and I can't tell you how excited I am about it! It's such a brilliant idea! My kids would love it.  Happy April Fool's day to you! It's the first Monday of the month and time for Prime Purchases with Tanya.  I was doing so well with my Amazon purchases right up until the end of the month when we decided to host Easter dinner at our house and I felt like I "needed" so much not having any Easter decorations at all.  I bought a few new cardigans for this "in between" season and really love this cable knit one so much it's all I can do to keep myself from buying a second one! Alec's Accepted Student Day at JWU

Last spring when Alec started his college planning I was pretty surprised that he only wanted to visit 2 colleges out of state (he visited a few in-state with his high school culinary class).  He ultimately decided to apply to just the 2 colleges we visited-- Johnson and Wales University (JWU) and the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Both ranked as the #1 & #2 schools in the U.S for culinary and baking/pastry arts. Day in the Life: Friday Favorites

 I decided to document last Friday for today's Friday Favorites post. I hardly ever document a day in the life anymore now that my boys are grown and mostly on their own. But I knew we had a pretty full day and thought it might be fun.  These are some of my favorite posts to read and I think I did a pretty great job remembering to document and take pictures for the whole day! 5:00 wake up and I allow myself to blog, read emails, etc. until 5:30 5:30 get up, get dressed for the gym, put away my laundry from the night before, make the bed. 5:45 head downstairs to make Alec's lunch (1/2 way though he came to the balcony to tell me he wasn't going to school since he wasn't feeling well-- he's 18 and allowed to make this call himself).  I decided to make a salad, some chicken salad, hard boil some eggs, and cut up all the fruit since we had just done groceries after dinner last night and none of that had been done yet. I emptied, reloaded, and restarted the dishwasher.
