Belated Birthday Fun at Foxwoods-- Hell's Kitchen, Steve Martin & Martin Short

For my birthday this year (which was back in July) my husband bought us tickets to see a show at Foxwoods Resort and Casino. He planned a really fun night for us complete with hotel and dinner reservations. He did tell me on my actual birthday that we'd be going in September to see Martin Short and Steve Martin and would finally get to try out Hell's Kitchen (one of the few restaurants left there that we have never been able to get a reservation for). It sounded like so much fun and I just could not wait for the weekend to arrive.

My husband took the day off Friday September 25th off from work and while it had not been part of our original plan, we headed out pretty early (around 9 am or so) to head in the complete opposite direction to New Hampshire. The motorsport place we had bought our new Polaris Ranger from earlier in June had called since my father in law dropped our Ranger off to get worked on... the news was not good. It looks like we might end up needing a whole new engine but they really are confident that Polaris will cover this under our warranty and assured us there was nothing we could have done to it that would have caused the problems we're having. Luckily my husband took the news well and we both left in a good mood as the people there are great-- both the service department and the sales people.

They recommended a local place for lunch and we had a great meal! I got a lobster salad BLT and it was incredible... but I forgot to take photos. Sorry.

From there we headed the 15 or so minutes further north to Kittery, Maine and did just a quick bit of shopping at the Trading Post. My husband needed some new lures for his deep sea fishing trip coming up but they didn't end up having the ones he likes to use in stock.

It was close to 2 o'clock so we plugged Foxwoods into the GPS and headed south... back past home.. and right to the resort arriving at 4 for check in. This time we were staying in the Fox Tower. The check in area is real pretty with a water/rock wall behind the check in desk and a large atrium with another water feature and it was all decorated so pretty for fall. The line moved quite quickly and we were in our room by 4:15 or so.

I forgot to take any photos of the room but they were clean, spacious, and the bed was SO comfortable. I slept so great Friday night. We had a lovely view of the woods.

We elected to nap/watch TV and relax before dinner rather than explore as we've been to Foxwoods many, many times and we don't gamble. After some down time we showered and got ready for our dinner reservations. He made our reservations for 5:45 which turned out to be the perfect timing for our 8 o'clock show.

The restaurant is really fun and themed just like the show. There are photos of all the season winners lining the walls, the kitchen area is open and decorated half red/half blue. The pitchfork/ Devil staff is found everywhere-- on chair backs, in the chandeliers, built into the walls and even the cloth napkins have their logo embroidered on them. The food was great! We both agreed it was our second favorite restaurant there.

My husband got the 3 course prix fixe three course menu with scallop appetizer, beef wellington, and their signature sticky toffee pudding... I tried a bite or two of them all and they were great. I elected to have no appetizer but got the short rib dish and had a chocolate sin cake for dessert (a chocolate/espresso/blackberry mix) that was incredible.

As soon as dinner was done we headed over to the theater and joined the lines to get in, find our seats, etc. We had nearly 30 minutes until the show started and probably should have walked around a bit first as we were both getting antsy sitting and waiting after a long day of sitting. I did get him to agree to a selfie though!

Steve Martin and Martin Short were a whole lot of fun though and had us laughing. The show started just a bit after the 8 o'clock start time and ran until just past 10. There was no intermission but it really seemed to fly by. Steve Martin plays banjo in a band called the Steep Canyon Rangers and they were part of the show too. I'm not a huge bluegrass fan but it was definitely enjoyable.

We were thankful for the short walk to our room and slept a good 7 or 8 hours straight through. Then lazed around in bed watching TV for far longer than we ever do at home. I finally got up, showered, and changed and we checked out to head down the road to a local spot that my husband knows since he works in this area almost daily. It's called Jerry's and looks like nothing special but the food was really good. We had a lovely breakfast (that I also forgot to photograph!). Their homemade cinnamon rolls are delicious. Unfortunately the jeans I packed were capri jeans and it was a pretty chilly, rainy, windy weekend with a Nor-Easter blowing through but thankfully we were home by lunch and I was able to change into something warmer.

  6. I went to see them once. They are classics, but I realized I like them much better in TV shows/movies than live. I love watching them in Only Murders in the Building and of course, Three Amigos is such a funny movie classic too!
