Hodgepodge Wednesdays-- Beauty, Trains, & Birthdays

I'm finally linking up with Joyce once again this week for her Wednesday Hodgepodge.

 1. How do you define beauty?

When I think of beauty, I tend to thing of something I enjoy looking at that brings me joy. Mostly I associate this word with nature.  Here are a few "beauty" shots from Friday's hike.

2. Have you ever taken a trip by train? If so where did you go and what did you think of the experience? If not do you have any desire to do so? Where would you like to go? (You might find inspiration here-The Best Train Trips in The World)

Sort of; we've taken a few scenic train rides. I took the boys on one down the Ct River one day and it was quite pretty.

My husband and I took a dinner train ride out of Burlington, Vermont. That one wasn't quite so scenic but the food was pretty good.

However, we've never used a train as transportation for a trip.

3. Shell shocked, bombshell, bandshell, shellacking, in a nutshell, walking on eggshells...choose one and tell us why you chose it, or how it relates to your life in some way currently.

Shellshocked or bombshell (in the sudden, shocking, unpleasant, surprise definition of the word)-- both describe perfectly how I've felt about my father's death and some of the things I've learned since then.

4. Tacos, pistachios, oysters, clams, eggs...your favorite food on the list that comes in/with a shell?

Pistachios are my favorite from this list.

5. Are birthdays a big deal in your house? Is your own birthday a big deal in some way? Elaborate.

Birthdays were a big deal in our house but not so much anymore as my boys have gotten older. In fact, Evan has already warned me he has zero intention of coming home for his birthday next week as he'd rather stay at school and celebrate with friends. I'm okay with that and will get a care package to him this weekend.

As the boys' birthdays have gotten less and less, I feel like mine have gotten more and more though. My mom and I have always planned a shopping day near my actual birthday and we often had her and my step father over for dinner and dessert and presents that night and while we still try to do that most years my husband has been stepping things up and often plans an overnight away. This year, rather than going away for my actual birthday when Alec had just arrived home from Greece, he bought us tickets for a show next weekend and we've got dinner reservations and hotel reservations to go with it. It should be a really fun night.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

After chatting very, very briefly with a lawyer (actually I think it was a paralegal) in Florida on Friday and basically feeling at a loss with what to do I took myself on a nice long 4 or 5 mile hike around the dam. Hiking, listening to audiobooks (while I hike), and taking photos help center me and push aside all the frustration. I forgot my "real" camera at home but managed some pretty photos with my phone. In addition to the ones I already shared I also took these.

  1. I'm sorry that you aren't getting any or many answers re your dad's estate. It must be frustrating! Your pictures are so pretty- I hope the hike made you feel a little better. Dinner on a train sounds neat!

    1. Aw, thank you. At this point I've just thrown up my hands. Eventually the ex-wife or her family are going to need our help as they can't sell anything that was jointly owned either but it sounds like the bulk of the work (culling through files, finding titles/formal paperwork) is going to be up to them. The hike did help a lot!

Oh wow! That train is fantastic and I love the idea of dinner on a train!
Sending love and hugs. It sounds like you have had so much on your plate with the death of your father. Hiking sounds like a great way to take a break from it all.
Yes! It is the same here with birthdays, as my girls have got less and less mine has got more.

    1. Aw, thank you so much. I enjoyed the dinner on the train. It was a neat experience-- though I'm not sure it's something I'd bother to do again if that makes sense.

  6. I forgot that once Tom planned and bought us a murder mystery train anniversary dinner. It was really fun except we had to share our table for four with two strangers and make awkward conversation. Lol.
That is a wonderful birthday gift and I'm excited for you to get away and get your mind off of the adulting. It's exhausting to deal with and yours is more complicated than most.

    1. That was like our first cruise! Eating a meal with strangers is awkward for sure. Oh you don't even know the half of it! My sister and I have been joking that one of us needs to write a book after all this! The stories we're hearing are like something straight of a Jerry Springer episode and change dramatically from person to person...

  7. Something about taking a walk and letting my subconscious mind help me solve a problem works well for me. You too?

    1. It's not helping me solve much but it definitely clears my head and releases stress.

  10. As always, Joanne, you've shared some beautiful photos. I feel more peaceful just looking at them. I enjoyed reading the prompts...seeing how you answered them...and thinking about how I would. Good luck with your father's estate and the challenges you are facing. May you find peace throughout this difficult process.

  11. Your father's death seems similar to my stepmom's...being shellshocked is a great word for it.
I love how you enjoy Mother Nature for everyday living.

  13. So sorry to read about your being shellshocked and, yes, of your loss. (I'm not sure if I already read that somewhere...but sorry.) There is, indeed, so much beauty in nature and it really does help bring us peace...and to calm us. I love that! Your photos are evidence of both!

  14. I'm so sorry you're still having so many issues regarding your father's estate. I can't imagine how frustrating that is. I do love all the photos you took! You always get some great shots of the outdoors!

  15. Shellshocked is such a good term to describe what you went through. Your hiking/walk pictures are beautiful!

  16. Im sorry for all that you're dealing with. I think it is so hard when we are navigating emotions of death but then also having to do the "adult" things that are required way too soon afterward. Praying you get answers. Enjoyed your answers to questions and your beautiful photos.

  17. I'm sorry you're dealing with some unpleasantness. The hike sounded like good respite. It was fun reading your answers this week!

  18. A walk outside is always a good reminder that the sky is still above us and the ground is below us. I often need a reminder in hard times that the sky isn't falling even if it feels like it. I am glad you have such beauty around you in your walks to hep during this time.

  19. Wow - gorgeous photos!! I can see how hiking through that scenery would help calm you after frustrating phone calls etc, and I hope it did. Sorry that there are still so many issues to deal with in settling the estate. Hope you get the cooperation needed, and that you are having a good week!

  20. Sometimes a walk outside, in nature with all its lovely sights and sounds, really helps. This is such a difficult time, I get it...thinking of you.
