Evan's Dorm Supplies and Our Packing List

Evan could not be more different from Alec (you can see Alec's list here!). Alec tends to bring more and more things to college with him each year making his room more and more like an apartment/home whereas Evan is more like what I think of when I think of a typical guy's dorm room-- in other words he really didn't seem to care at all and honestly didn't think we needed to buy anything. Basically he just wanted some sheets/bedding, some clothes, and his desktop computer and couldn't have cared about anything else.

So I reminded him of things like towels, shoes for the shower, etc. It's been a bit of give and take but I think we're both happy with what he has and I have to remind myself constantly that he's only 30 minutes away so if there's something he really needs that he thought he wouldn't we can still get it to him.

I did supply his packing list below like I did with Alec (though as you can see Evan's is MUCH smaller!).

Here are the things we bought for Evan:

This comforter/ bed in a bag set (he'll use this gray/white sheet set as a backup set that Alec used Freshman year since Sophomore and Junior year Alec's apartment has a full sized bed).

We got him this thick mattress pad.

This laundry hamper in navy-- we love that is folds up so nice and small for transport but holds a ton. Alec has the same one in teal.

And this fold-able hamper to carry clean clothes in (another item Alec had that we liked)

I bought him a set of these bags to carry everything in... yep, we loved Alec's.

Since Evan is bringing his desktop computer he needed (wanted?) an ethernet cable. He picked out this one and we figure no matter the size of the room we're good for the next 4 years.

Evan will most likely NOT have a private bathroom like Alec did so we got him this shower caddy

And bought him some plain black flip flops we found at Old Navy.

We also bought him sage towels from Target. He elected to get 2 large bath towels and 1 hand towel.

One thing we didn't do a great job on with Alec was making sure he had a full first aid kit that included medicine and things like that so I bought Evan this tote to put stuff in and filled it with things like cold and flu medicine, Motrin, Sudafed, throat lozenges, a digital thermometer, etc.

Then we also got him a standard first aid kit with band-aids and bandages (which you can see already packed in his tote).

Evan has a travel hair dryer he'll bring with him but he asked for a hand mirror. He picked out this one (though I did suggest one that stands or even a larger one we could attach inside his closet but he said that wasn't necessary).

We picked out a black trash can-- we have plenty of mini trash bags left to go with it.

 And this handheld vacuum

We also got this foldable Swiffer that can use wet or dry pads and we'll pack an assortment of cleaning products too.  Clorox wipes, paper towels, mutli-purpose cleaner, etc.

We bought this hinged tote to put all the cleaning supplies in and anything liquid that we don't want to pack in the soft sided bags above.

Finally I convinced Evan to use/get these same storage bins for the side of the mini fridge since Alec really liked the ones he had... and for whatever reason I wasn't thinking at the time that Evan could have just used Alec's (and by the time I did it was too late to return them!)

And these too-- yes they just look like spice racks here but they do a great job holding things like granola bars, tea/drink boxes, snacks, etc.

  2. Wow, you are so organised! There are things there that I would not have thought of! I'm a mean mum though - I send the old towels and bedding from home. Not everything is new!

    1. Aw, thanks! Bedding from home wont work as college beds are sized twin XL and that is not what anyone around the house has.

  3. That is good that Evan is only 30 minutes away so if he gets stuck and needs anything you can help out. I love that bedding set and good idea about the first aid kit!

    1. Yeah, Alec was only 45 minutes so I like that they both opted to stay pretty close to home. That way they still feel and experience independence but we're close by if something happens.

  4. I should check the list that Donnie (emphasis on Donnie as he is the super organized one, not me!!) made and see if there's anything additional he thought of. You thought of so much!! Great job, mama! I like how all your medicines are in one place. I will show the picture to Alyssa and see if that's something she'd like for her apartment- to have all OTC meds in one little caddy.

    1. I've warned Evan that since he's pretty much been home alone for his whole life that most likely he's going to catch EVERYTHING his first year in the dorms.

  5. There is so much to buy. That's definitely something I remember. When my oldest went to uni we didn't do. much with Amazon. It was 2006 and Prime wasn't very old. We were overseas and it was Amazon UK and we had to get everything across the pond, so we pretty much landed and hit Target and spent a million dollars in one trip lol. You're a seasoned pro now!

  6. The thing that attaches to the mini fridge is so smart! Do you remember me telling the blog world that my kids' college provided the fridge and microwave? It was so nice! They had ironing boards and vacuums and other cleaning products on each hall. It was 2020, but I think they still do it.

    1. That is awesome! Alec's college had a company that we had to get the micro/fridge from and it was waiting for us in his room, all installed on arrival day but it wasn't included. They did have ironing facilities since all the culinary kids had to have ironed chef whites daily but no other cleaning supplies. As far as I know Clark also has a company we have to order the micro/fridge combo from and it will be installed and ready for us upon move in too but it's not included. Both colleges allow you to bring your own mini fridge but in order to have a microwave it must be part of the set from the specific companies they work with.

  7. As always, your organizational skills are amazing. It's a big step to leave home for college. #MMBC

  8. He sounds like Zachary would be with college packing! He literally wanted the same sheets and blanket he has at home, nothing special.

  9. I can't believe how organized you are! Evan looks all set! I wish we'd had (or known about) those mini fridge attachments when our girls went to college - they both look like they'd come in so handy! Your list will be so helpful for those who are headed to college this fall!

  10. Very smart accessories Joanne, looks like he has everything he needs. I think the collapsing laundry basket will be great for my son Jason in the cottage.
