Acadia Maine 2026 Trip; Days #4 & #5
We have never taken the time to drive to the Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia-- the only part of Acadia that is on the mainland and not on Mount Desert Island. So that's we decided to do on Wednesday. It took us a little over an hour to drive there and we left immediately after breakfast.

The welcome center is a good 1/2 way down the scenic drive.
We stopped at the Rockerfeller Welcome Center and checked out the exhibits then finished driving the scenic loop road until we found the parking lot we wanted for our hike. We were hiking Schoodic head to Buck Cove Mountain loop trail.
A large portion of the start of the trail IS the paved park loop trail but then we came to the "real" trail head and started up... and up and up. We had some pretty views in no time.
The last portion of the trail is part of the bike paths.
We left the park around 12:30 or so and stopped to eat lunch at Bunker's just outside of the park boundary. The food was delicious!

W then drove the hour or so back to southwest harbor, stopping for ice cream at The Salt Box on the way. I got deer tracks this time.

We headed to our B&B to refill water bottles and then headed out to Jordan pond to walk/hike the Jordan pond loop. It was 4:30 or so by the time we arrived so the parking lot was pretty emptied out. It was a beautiful walk.
Next morning we ate breakfast and then got on the road for the long drive home. It was the first breakfast I had liked every single component of & we left knowing we'd probably never be back to this same B&B. Next time we'll try a new place. We had a perfectly lovely stay but it definitely wasn't the same for us without Dora & Daniel.
We left Southwest Harbor around 9 and didn't make it back home until 7pm but we did make a stop or two on our way.

We stopped for lunch in York, Maine eating at one of our favorites-- the York River Landing. We had a lovely view and a delicious lunch (that I forgot to take photos of!) then went and got our last ice cream of the trip.

We stopped at a place nearer to home and my husband negotiated a trade of our RZR for this new "toy/ tool." We'll use it for off-roading fun and for working around the property.
However, it meant another trip on Friday to go drop off our RZR and pick up the Ranger.

You know I don't we just sort of remember from year to year which ones we've hiked. Though the blog does come in handy to remember the actual names of the trails.

DeleteWell, dad gum it, I was hoping you would run into Dora and Daniel. Sorry that you didn't get to see them. Kind of bittersweet to say goodbye to the B&B knowing you won't be back there to stay again. Goodness, the fly fishing fudge ice cream looks like heaven in an ice cream cone. You have so many beautiful photos to scrapbook. Can't wait to see your pages. Your new toy looks like lots of fun.
ReplyDeleteNope we did not; once home Alec and I did some internet sleuthing and found them. They are still in Maine and running an inn but it's near Boothbay Harbor-- which is actually closer to us. I've been debating about scheduling a short little weekend trip this fall to visit them...

I probably will drive it eventually because at least with this one I can see out the back window; I rarely drove our old one and supposedly this one is much easier to drive.

That hike up to Buck Cove Mountain looked like a serious leg-burner with all those upward trails, but wrapping it up with a scenic bike path walk and a delicious harbor-view lunch at Bunker's is the absolute perfect reward. Fitting in the Jordan Pond loop at 4:30 in the afternoon was a genius move to dodge the daytime tourist rush, and that glassy water looks so peaceful. It is bittersweet leaving a favorite B&B knowing the vibe changed without the original owners, but that final breakfast of almond pear pancakes and raspberry dark chocolate muffins was a spectacular send-off. Plus, capping off a long ten-hour drive home by successfully trading the RZR for a shiny new Ranger tool is the ultimate road trip victory.

DeleteI love the paths. And that water is so incredibly blue. What a hike that was, heading up, but well worth it, I suspect I'm glad you had a spot of ice cream (for energy, of course!)
