Acadia Maine 2026 Trip; Day #1
We left last Sunday the 31st to head up to Maine. We stopped in Freeport, Maine to buy some socks for my husband before continuing on to Wiscasset, Maine for lunch at Red's Eats. Typically the line is around the block and takes an hour. This year, for whatever reason, it took 2! It also got really cloudy, windy, and cold while we were waiting. I was not a happy camper but tried to keep my grumbling to a minimum. We both agreed the wait was not worth it at all (now, even the hour wait seems crazy to me as I pretty much wont wait in a line that long for anything but my husband insists they have the best lobster rolls ever).

We made it to our car just as the rain started falling. We settled in for our last 2 1/2 hours into Mount Dessert Island. And checked into our favorite B&B-- Harbour Cottage Inn... only to find our favorite 2 innkeepers Dora and Daniel no longer run the place!
Seriously, after 4 or so years of coming here they were beginning to feel like family and I was so bummed to hear they no loner worked there. We had debated about staying somewhere else this trip but didn't want to miss seeing them. I was dying to hear how their winter went and I just knew they'd ask what college Evan settled on. Thank goodness we brought Alec to meet them last year and not this year. He and Daniel had hit it off and Daniel gave Alec a tour of the kitchen. But hey, vacation is vacation and I was determined not to let that ruin our time here. I just knew in my heart it wasn't going to be the same though.
We settled in and walked down to town for dinner at Cafe Drydock. I had the halibut. Oh so good!

I remember you talking about how much you liked the proprietors of the B&B you normally stay at. It is too bad that they no longer run the place. A two hour wait- oh, I would have been grumbling!! Your dinner looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteAlec and I have since "found" them; they run another inn in a different area of Maine so perhaps we'll try there next year.

DeleteOh wow! That is quite the queue for the lobster rolls but the shrimp platter does look so good. Oh no that is a shame that the B&B have new people running it.
ReplyDeleteI think it's nuts... to me a lobster roll is a lobster roll but my husband looks forward to this one place every year..
DeleteIt's so sad when people have moved on that you established that travel relationship with. That happened to us with where we stayed in Myrtle Beach. But what a grand time you will have!
ReplyDeleteWe did have a great time--- though the breakfasts weren't quite as good as we were used to. We've gotten spoiled over the years.
DeleteI love lobster but I agree with you that a two hour wait to get one is not soemthing I'd want to do. I'm sure it was sad that your favorite B&B owners changed--I hope the new innkeepers will be equally nice! I love Maine and Arcadia....looking forward to seeing the views on your posts.

DeleteThat's a long wait for lunch! Yikes, I'm definitely not as patient as you guys. I'm glad to read in the comments that you found out where your innkeeper friends went. Sounds like a nice opportunity for another vacation!!

DeleteI feel the same way about change when it comes to favorite people and places. Some friends of ours sold their brewery and it was not the same without them there. Everything changed, so we moved on, too. Sometimes that's better - you might a new place!

DeleteI agree that there aren't many things I would wait an hour or two to eat! That's so disappointing about the innkeepers. Did they retire?
ReplyDeleteNo, we found that they moved to another inn slightly closer to us but still on the Maine coast... so I'm secretly pricing out a fall trip! LOL
Delete2 hours! I don't know how you lasted that long. We have been staying at the same place when we go to the Eastern Sierra mountains. If the innkeepers ever move, I certainly would miss them. People certainly make a big difference when you travel.

DeleteWhat a mix of emotions to start your trip! I would have been grumbling too after a two-hour wait in the cold, especially when the weather turned. The blueberry soda sounds delicious, though, and your halibut dinner looks like the perfect reward after a long travel day. I can also understand how disappointing it must have been to learn your favorite innkeepers were gone after so many years of visits. Hopefully the rest of your time in Maine was filled with plenty of familiar favorites and new memories!

DeleteWe had a favorite restaurant, then our favorite server left as well as one of the hostesses. The vibe was just not the same so I understand how it would be even worse for something like a B & B. I hope the rest of the time was better. I've never had a lobster roll, can you believe that?

I only eat them in Maine. I like lobster but I don't love lobster. I won't eat them from Reds because they serve the lobster at room temperature and I like my lobster HOT.

The new people seemed nice but since the inn keeper is also the chef we rarely saw her and had zero conversations other than check in and check out. I don't like change either-- even when I know it's coming but particularly when I'm not prepared for it. I tried really hard to keep an open mind and like I told my husband if we had never stayed there before we would have thought it was great but comparing it to past trips we definitely found it lacking and don't think we'll be back.
DeleteHave to keep reading to see if you run into your friends maybe while you are there. I can't think of anywhere that would be worth a 2-hour wait for me and less likely for PC. But the halibut looks divine from the next restaurant.

DeleteIt is a bit bitter-sweet when a favorite place changes hands, but it sounds like a perfectly lovely farewell stay before heading down to York for one last nostalgic lunch. Upgrading to that new Ranger at the end of the road trip is the absolute ultimate way to wrap up a vacation, and it is going to be incredibly handy for both trail riding and getting things done around your property.
