Throwback Tuesday: How We Pack Our Days Full of Science Discoveries

My boys just love science!  They continually ask for fun science experiments, watch movies about animals, nature, and science and read about all sorts of science concepts through our books.

Today the boys begged to watch the Science of Disney Imagineering videos so we ended up spending our morning learning about gravity, fluids, and energy.

I think they were still disappointed that they were only able to watch them each once though.  At one point they stopped the movies and gathered up all their stuffed animals and blankets and brought them downstairs.  They spread out all the blankets & set up their animals so that their animals could watch too.


My boys spent the afternoon at their Mad Science camp learning all about the science behind crime scene investigation.

When I picked them up they were all excited to tell me about the mock crime scene that was set up with "police line do not cross" tape and that they read a story about solving crimes.

They talked about evidence, fingerprinting and photographing the crime scene.  They thought this was awesome!

They got a kit to take home where they can fill in their name, D. O. B., hair & eye color, height and weight, fingerprint themselves (including the ink set) and keep a lock of their hair.  Evan sat right down and got to work as soon as we walked in the door.

      
Alec found a new series of books to read at our library. He had discovered the author Sandra Markle a while back and just loves her series. She has a few but his favorites are the animal predators, animal scavengers, and animal prey series.

He just loves them and he can read an entire book in under 20 minutes.  These are the 5 books Alec has read today (sorry the photo is a bit dark).  Lucky for us he gets so excited about what he's reading that he can't help but share all these wonderful facts with us!


On any given day we might be:
  • Planting seeds and studying plant growth.
  • Taking a nature hike.
  • Mixing up play- dough, goop, silly putty, or some other concoction.
  • Baking up something yummy in the kitchen!
  • Running candy experiments
  • Watching movies like Wild Kratts, Magic School Bus, or Bill Nye.
  • We check out tons of science experiment books from our library and do as many experiments as we can.
  • Checking out objects under our microscope or using a magnifying glass.
These are just a few of the ways that we include science in our everyday lives; and I let the boys interests, questions, and ideas guide us in what we'll be learning about next.

    My girls were always crazy about science when they were younger too. It is such fun!
    Aww! How cute were all the stuffed animals.

      They had such huge collection of stuffed animals and even now they each still have at least a few of them.

    I really disliked science when I was a kid. But, when I began teaching it, I fell in love with it. I think it's because we were all hands on. I loved teaching the Scientific Process most of all because we had so many different activities for it.

      Yeah, I was so lucky that I had a passionate hands on science teacher in elementary school and again in a couple of high school classes so they made it so much fun.

15 Family Restaurant Games

When my boys were little and we'd take them out to eat I kept a small bag of toys in the car to grab on our way into any restaurant.  That way they would be entertained and a bit quieter while we enjoyed our meal. Now that the boys are older we don't keep a bag of toys handy but we do have few games we use to keep the boys occupied if they start getting bored or squirmy while we're waiting for our food or our check. While there are many phone apps, portable gaming systems and electronic games that could occupy my kids we prefer to use the time together at restaurants to connect with one another and so we tend to play games like: Hangman--   any restaurant that has paper place mats works well for this.  We take turns picking  a word and drawing our hangman stand then take turns calling out letters and seeing if we can solve the puzzle.   Tic Tac Toe-- This works best with pen on paper place mats but we have played making a grid with butter knives ...

Favorite TV Shows Growing Up in the 80's and early 90's

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? I can remember planning sleepovers and time with friends around TV Show lineups of our favorite shows... or else trying to set the VCR to record our favorite shows if we weren't going to be home. And through the years I had SO MANY favorites! Growing pains aired in 1985 which put me around age 8 and it stayed on the air until I was 15 or so; I'm pretty sure most people in my age group watched mostly for Kirk Cameron and all his antics.  I still have a soft spot for family sit-coms!  The Facts of Life aired when I was just 2  and stayed on the air until I was 11 so I'm sure the episodes I remember so fondly were either some of the later ones and then reruns shown later on when I was old enough to watch from the beginning. Ian is starting a new film study unit in our homeschool.  He loves watching movies and when I found the Thinking Tree Film Study Journal I just knew Ian would love the opportunity to watch movies as part of his homeschooling day.
