Share Our Lives: My Frequent Grocery Store Buys

It's the second Monday and time for Share Our Lives. The monthly link up where we share snippets of our lives.

This month we're talking about some of our most frequent grocery store buys.

I don't know why but I find I am rather fascinated by what people buy at the grocery store. I tend to check out the carts of those around me as we shop too.

I've noticed our groceries change every few years. I remember when the boys were little I'd buy 3 gallons of milk a week! I had big milk drinkers. Even my husband would order milk to drink when we went out to restaurants...  now weirdly no one really ever drinks it so I don't buy any!

But since this is all about the things we DO buy and those things that we buy frequently I thought I'd share those things that seem to ALWAYS be on my list now. Mostly we shop the perimeter of the store:

Fruit:

Berries of all kinds-- 2 containers of strawberries,  1 container each of: raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries (I usually stop mid-week to buy more of all berries!)

Pineapple (2-3)

Grapes (2 bags-- one green one red)

Apples (10)

Oranges/clementines (10-12)

Kiwi (6)

Bananas (2 bunches minimum)

Vegetables:

Peppers

spinach/romaine/crispy greens

tomatoes

cucumbers

carrots

broccoli florets

potatoes

celery

mushroom

Protein:

Chicken

Beef

Deli meat and cheese (mainly for the boys)

eggs (usually 2-3 dozen!)

nonfat plain Greek yogurt

canned solid white tuna in spring water

hummus

Nuts/seeds

Bakery style bread-- usually 2-3 loaves depending on who is home/what hours people are working.

Not the perimeter of the store:

Croutons

dressing/dressing mixes (for the rest of the family; I make my own)

chips-- I buy single serving bags of either the Kettle brand or the Boulder Canyon for the boys' lunches

My husband's Love Crunch Peanut butter/chocolate granola (I make my own from scratch)

I hope you join us next month when we'll be talking about our favorite cleaning products.

  1. It is always interesting to see what others buy. Maybe you mentioned this and I missed it but when you mention the items that you buy are you talking this is what you typically buy in one week? Or does this amount of food last you longer?

  3. It’s interesting to see your grocery staples.
Fruits vanish fast in my house too.

    1. Yes! I figure it's better everyone eats fruit than other snacks.

  4. That's an impressive amount of fruit! I like frozen versions of some fruit better for yogurt so that is nice that it keeps longer. I bet your bill is really high when everyone is home. I am trying to learn how to shop for two! And, how to cook for just two! I have been giving meals to both kids when I see them, too, so it's not really exact yet.

    1. I have frozen fruit but hardly anyone ever uses it unless they're baking.

  5. So so colorful and healthy- I can see why your meals are the same!

  6. Oof the milk - 3 gallons was a regular buy per week at my house, and like you said, the adults drank it, too! I haven't bought a gallon of milk in ages - mostly because I had to back off of dairy. For me the regular purchases are romaine, colorful bell peppers, mandarins, apples, deli meat and cheese, catalina crunch cereal...for awhile there I was adding in kombucha each week. Nowadays I am on a small sardine kick. And yes, I look at other people's carts, too!

    1. Yeah, we hardly buy any dairy products at all anymore-- 3 of us struggle with dairy nowadays.

  7. I always like seeing what other people buy too. I'll admit my cart needs more vegetables.

    1. We often have cashiers commenting on all the fresh fruits and veggies we buy. We do buy a LOT.

  8. We were going through a lot of eggs but with Zachary away and me eating less we're using a bit less.

    1. Yeah, we definitely use a lot more eggs when Alec is home.

  9. I love seeing what other people buy with their good shops too, I find it so interesting! I don't buy much meat with our shop as it usually comes in the Gousto recipe boxes that I order. The only meat I get every week is sliced ham.

    1. Ian is the only one that eats sandwich meat on the regular so I can usually buy a pound or two and freeze some. I didn't used to buy nearly as much meat when we had our 1/2 cow and meat CSA going.

  10. I also love seeing what others buy. Your shopping trip with a full house is so different from our emptynester basket!

    1. I'm not sure ours would be much different other than the deli meat/ chips/ bread... most of the fruit is eaten by my husband and I!

  11. Your family is full of healthy eaters and they certainly love fruit! #MMBC

    1. Yep! They still aren't huge veggie eaters but they will all eat salad at dinner time so I can't complain too much.

  12. We used to buy lots of milk too when the boys were younger. Now we struggle to get through two litres before the use by date!

    1. Yeah, I was often dumping spoiled milk down the drain so now we never buy it unless we have a recipe that calls for it.

    1. I do sometimes see products I had never noticed before.

  14. We're big fruit and vegetable eaters here too and the bulk of my cart is always produce. I am nosy about what people have in their carts too. It's fascinating and sometimes a little bit shocking lol. Occasionally I'll see something in someone's cart and then go grab that product for mine too.

    1. Yes! Sometimes it is really shocking-- I always hope that the carts really laden with junk food (and not much "real" food looking items) are just prepping for a party.

  15. I think this is so interesting too to see what others buy! That is a lot of food, but I forget that you still have kids living at home with you.

    1. Yep, most nights I'm still cooking for 4 or 5 (though my brother really only eats with us on Sunday night and buys most of his own food for the week).

  16. You buy lots of fruit! I need to do that, but we rarely eat it all before it goes bad. Any tips? I have been buying way too much comfort food in the shape of overly processed stuff for Mike. I’m pushing protein at him now like crazy!

    1. Yes, we buy a LOT of fruit but we all eat a lot of fruit. I make sure to wash and cut and have it all prepped (other than apples, bananas, and oranges) so that it's grab and go and nice and convenient to eat then it's not passed over in favor of other easy to eat snacks.

  17. It wasinteresting to see what your weekly groceries are. We like to stock up at Costco every two weeks or so. When my son was a teen, I also had to buy gallons of milk and orange juice! Now, we only use milk for our morning coffee or a rare bowl of cereal.

    1. I can't remember the last time anyone in this house ate a bowl of cereal! Looking back I have no idea when or why that stopped but it did.

  18. This was such a fun topic this month. We like to buy now almond milk or oat milk. When I go shopping at Costco I like to see what other people have in their cart. Take care and it's such a beautiful day and I hope you can get outside to enjoy it.

It's funny we NEVER buy oranges, but this time of year we grab them from our tree.
