Evan's Accepted Student Day at Clark

Clark had some big shoes to fill as we had a really wonderful time at JWU's accepted student day for Alec. 

Check in was at 8:15 and we spent most of the morning in the athletic center. They turned the basketball court into a banquet hall.

Since we were on the early side they had a game/quiz for us to play online about Clark and the Worcester, Mass area. By 9 it was time for welcome speeches. 

Then we sat through what they call their Clark Experience panel at 9:30 -- various faculty and a current student talk about how Clark integrates classroom learning with hands on and experiential learning. Most students use some type of interdisciplinary learning to somewhat curate their own path to graduate (with lots and lots of staff help).   

 
At 10 Evan was sitting in on a sample class-- they had at least a dozen to pick from but he chose Psychology of Protest and Riots in the Jonas Clark Hall. The building they refer to as their poster building; the oldest on campus.  

My husband and I could have stayed in our seats at the athletic center for a parent perspective panel on Clark or headed over to the science center for an overview of financial aid but since we already have one in college and know these 2 rolls rather well we opted to sign up for a campus tour. I figured at least we'd be walking. Having toured the campus once already we didn't learn a whole lot but we did learn a bit more about the housing choices freshman have (our last tour made it sound like there was just the one dorm for all incoming freshman). 

By 11 it was time for our next seminar. Evan and I had picked Living on Campus & Your First Year Experience we were learned even more about dorm life, choices, living arrangements, how students can get around Worcester, the various events the school holds yearly, and student safety.

After that it was 12 and time for our lunch (after lunch we had 45 minutes at the academic fair then there was supposed to be one last session [of which we didn't see a single topic we really cared to learn more about] then they were going to split us up into a parent coffee social and a student fondue social).... but we left campus altogether for lunch and never returned.

Since lunch was in the athletic center it was all prepared cold salads and sandwiches; none of which Evan would have eaten. He doesn't like many cold foods and definitely not cold cuts.  Since we had been to campus for an open house we already went to an academic fair. 

We've already sent in our deposit (only 12 other students of the 300+ in the room had done so) and know Evan is going to be a Clarkie so we really had only wanted to see their sample class and learn more about dorm life. Luckily since his friend already attends we've been on campus a few times and we've seen/ heard about some of their other dorm choices for upperclassmen. Evan really enjoyed his class and I think I can see him settling into life on campus decently. 

 We had a really delicious lunch just a block over and at the suggestions of the one of the staff members today we're going to ask some family members for gift cards for local eateries near campus as graduation gifts. Peppercorns definitely made the list!
