My Artwork: Past and Present
I started taking art lessons when I just 5 or 6. My grandmother was already taking my older sister to art classes so all 3 of us took lessons together for a little while. We had a local artist who turned her whole basement into an art studio and had lessons. Christina O'Brian was her name and she passed away in 2017. Through the years she had me painting with both oil and acrylics and while I enjoy both acrylics has a much easier clean up.
My grandmother was quite an artist. Sadly, I only have a few pieces painted by her.
I didn't think I had any of my earlier painting projects but my mom found these two in some of her boxes when they were unpacking in their new house.
I don't remember either one of these but they sure do make me laugh/smile. There aren't any dates on them but I know I was in elementary school at the time.
I kept those weekly lessons up until I was in high school. Then I gave up our weekly lessons for art classes at the school. In fact, my senior year I was taking 3 or 4 art classes a day!
Sadly I haven't kept much of my art work but I did find one tote with some artwork in it.
I painted this in middle school and both me and one of my friends worked together to make the frame for it in 7th (or 8th) grade shop class.
I think all of these drawings are from my high school years. I really enjoyed drawing Precious Moments Figures and Disney characters. I used to pause our VHS tapes and draw what was on the screen.
Just a small sampling; I had a whole 3-ring binder full of drawings and water color paintings.
Plus I have a few larger paintings have been framed and put up around our house-- like this oval landscape I painted in high school. My high school art teacher bought the frame for me as a graduation gift!

I can't remember if I painted this in high school or perhaps 8th grade, but my mom found a local artist that was offering a Bob Ross painting class in her home for a day and talked the lady into letting me join. I was the youngest by far in a room full of women but had the best time!
I think these two were also painted in high school.
I minored in fine arts in college too with the intent of becoming an art teacher. I learned so much. We had to stretch our own canvases, we learned to soak the watercolor paper and staple it down onto a board where it would dry and then we could really paint watercolors on it without it warping. I learned print making and used an opaque projector for the first time in my life. I loved the challenge of these classes.
Once again I saved far more of my watercolors and pastel drawings than anything else.
It kills me how much these skills have deteriorated by not using them all these years but I have been steadily working on gaining them back. One thing I have noticed is that the quality of materials like paint and canvas and brushes have really gone downhill. We used to have wonderful mom & pop arts shops around that sold real quality items and now all we have are stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby which don't seem to see the same level and variety of products.
But I've had fun diving back into art these past couple of years. I've only attempted painting with acrylic on canvas so far but I have plans to get back to watercolors too.

I love seeing posts like this that show progression! Sometimes we don't feel like we are getting better but when we look back we can see how far we have come, right?
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYour creativity is remarkable, past and present 💕
ReplyDeleteIt’s wonderful that you are diving back in with acrylics and planning for watercolors again!
Aw, thank you so much.
DeleteBeautiful work! You really are very talented. I love the sleigh your grandmother painted, and the very kind graduation gift from you high school art teacher. I also really need to start painting and drawing again. It is hard to find the time...
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteWhat lovely paintings, yes, even the ones from elementary school, you really do have talent. I love the sleigh painting from your grandmother.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteI don't think I knew that was your major! My mom was an art teacher and now my sister is an elementary art teacher. My niece is a PICU nurse and paints in her off time. I love how you are getting back to this. It's like my post on FUN and what you did when you were 9 that you loved! I am partial to your horse and oval landscape paintings.
ReplyDeleteThat oval painting is one of my all time favorites.
DeleteIt is neat to see your paintings throughout the years. Such talent :). I'm glad you're getting into it again. It's wonderful to use our talents...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYou are so very talented! Glad you exploring painting again :)
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI feel like watercolors are having a moment. I'm glad you're tapping back in to something you loved and had talent for. My grandfather was an artist. He lived in New Mexico and painted mostly desert related scenes and wildlife. My mom is artistic and majored in art for a while but switched to Spanish later. She always has had such a great eye and brought beauty into our house in so many ways. Enjoy re-connecting with this hobby again.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you. For whatever reason I often have a harder time coming up with ideas of what I'd like to paint while using watercolors.
DeleteThese are all beautiful, my friend! My favorites are the barn and that New England style home. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteOh wow! How wonderful to have your grandmothers art work! You are so talented, your artwork is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYou are so talented!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI always admire people who can paint! Great job. I took an art class as a little kid but never got good at it.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteThese are wonderful, I hope you continue to paint more and more! It is always fun to see the journey we have taken with learned skills, through the years. #MMBC
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you so much.
DeleteI've known you're creative, but I had never realized what a great artist you are. Right at the beginning are several art pieces your mother found from years ago. I just plain love the Christmas sled and the painting of an iris, one of my favorite flowers. I'm also envious of all the classes you had. There were art classes in elementary school, not to the degree you described. My father's hobby was sketching and painting. He died when I was 14. I remember spending days drawing the flowers from the condolence cards. I took one art class my senior year in high school and it was filled with boys who had experience in graphics. #MMBC
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you! My high school art teacher and I had to work hard together to create a few independent studies in order for me to take so many my senior year. But by that point I was doing art constantly on my own at home too.
DeleteThese are beautiful! You are great at it! My daughter and I painted last week while we were stuck at home during the snow!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteOMG- Joanne! You're such a talented artist! 💜
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYou are so talented! These are all so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteIt's wonderful to hear you are getting back into painting more again, it would be such a pity if your talent wasn't used!
ReplyDeleteAw, thanks. I was starting to feel the same way.
DeleteThese are so beautiful and what an amazing talent you have! I especially love the landscape paintings as landscapes are always my favorites. I've done one Bob Ross lesson from one of his books almost 30 years ago. Sadly it was ruined when water got into our basement at one time.
ReplyDeleteAw, that is too bad. I get such inspiration looking through other art books.
DeleteYou are very talented, Joanne, and so fortunate that your grandmother and mother encouraged your talent through the years. I also loved drawing and painting but I had the opposite of encouragement--my mother discouraged it as she believed "all artists starved" and she wanted me to learn "a trade." I think that comes from her growing up in an immigrant family during the Depression era. I also regret giving it up my art and sometimes think I'll have the time to get back to it one day, but one thing for sure is that I've encouraged the love of art and creativity it in my children and grandchildren. PS: I think it is wonderful that you have geothermal heat and cooling in your home! I was very impressed with how it works and how long the systems last, etc.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you! I really was very fortunate; though both cautioned me not to pursue life plans as an artist but to find a way to make a living while enjoying art since we all believe in that starving artist theory too.
DeleteWow these are all so good. Your commitment to your skill really shows.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteWell, no wonder you love making greeting cards. And scrapbooking so much.
ReplyDeleteIt's wonderful you're getting back into this. And you have such talent
Xoxo
Jodie
Thank you! That is so sweet to hear.
DeleteI am envious of those with such artistic talent. I think it would be so much fun to create things on canvas like that. And how special that you shared that talent and hobby with your grandmother!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It really did create such a special bond between us.
DeleteOh wow, Joanne, these are wonderful! I can't draw a stick figure to save my life, but my sister and brother were both good at art. I know you are not thrilled with what you lost, but I have no doubt you will get back to where you want to be. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you! I do feel like with any other muscle the more I use it the more I'll strengthen it.
DeleteYou are so talented. I loved seeing this walk down memory lane, with all your different interests explored through art. I also took private art lessons and then classes in high school. Sadly, I haven't been very artistic in my adult years, but am slowly recapturing some of the interest. My father painted as a hobby, and I have some of his paintings hanging in the house. You are so right about the quality of art supplies lately.
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you so much!
DeleteI think its great that you saved so much of your work. A couple or more of them are very worthy of hanging on your walls! It was nice to see how your skill progressed. I have been creating art lately as a way to relax. So therapeutic!
ReplyDeleteI really wish I had saved more and we do have several of them hanging on our walls.
DeleteYou're very talented, Joanne! Love peeking at your Disney drawings. Funny, I literally could've written this post myself. I did the art classes, the 3-4 periods senior year in high school, loved to paint Disney characters. I went to school for fashion design, accepted to a university that had a 3/1 program with FIT. I changed my plans after a few semesters and let my skills go, too...now they've morphed into other crafty pursuits, I guess like your card making! I also agree, I miss those mom and pop shops that sold all those fabulous acrylic and oil paints...not the same. Fun to look back though!
ReplyDeleteAw,thank you! I made all my own prom dresses and nearly went into fashion design too!
DeleteYou are so creative and talented, Joanne. How special that you kept so many of your earlier works, both as a keepsake and as a way to see how your skills have grown and developed over time. Ruth @playworkeatrepeat
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteWow!!! I knew you were artistic, but I had no idea what an artist you are! These are amazing! It seems like the mom and pop stores of any kind are long gone. In my hometown, we had a store that sold all kinds of craft supplies as well as fabric. They got very involved in antiques and quit carrying the craft items. It's hard to find quality anything anymore.

Aw, thanks! Yeah, fabric stores are pretty much extinct. I know we have one local-ish one left but that's it and I only know that since one of the ladies at the gym makes gorgeous quilts.
DeleteI loved seeing the progression. You are so talented. Drawing and painting are not my strong point at all. I love seeing others work. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI love that your grandmother took you and your sister to art class. That is such a beautiful gift. I really like your art work. It looks lovely.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Those lessons were really special.
DeleteI love seeing your art! So glad you got back into it. Art journaling is what I do and I recently got back to it again.

Aw, thank you so much!
DeleteWow! You are so talented. Also, I love that you took art lessons with your sister and grandmother. how special! They are all so wonderful, but I especially love the landscape painting...and the one that your art teacher had framed for you. stunning!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you! It was really special to take classes all together.
DeleteWell, you know how much I love art, so seeing this was a total delight. You have such a talent and I hope you return to more painting soon. I'm especially fond of the landscapes but you also have a good deal of whimsy too and I love that. That snow scene and the daffodils especially call to me. And how wonderful that you have gorgeous work from your grandmother. It must be in the genes!
ReplyDeleteIt must be!
DeleteI really love your artwork. It's so nice that you mother found some old artwork of you. You are very talented and I love your work. Please keep surprising me because I truly enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteOh how neat to see your old artwork! I love all of these! You are really talented. I love that you still have a couple of pieces from your grandmother. How special. You will be able to pass those down to your kids and your grandchildren one day!
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you!
DeleteThese are just stunning! What a beautiful talent. Taking art classes is such a wonderful idea. I just love that sled, and the one in the frame your teacher gave you. These are wonderful. Thank you for sharing this post with us at the Will Blog for Comments #77 linkup. :)
ReplyDeleteAw, thank you so much!
DeleteBeautiful! Just beautiful! Ha, we have art in common. I went to the Colorado Institute of Art (as it was called back then in 89') After high school. Though I haven't painted in ages, my hands don't work the greatest for painting & drawing anymore. I agree with you on preferring acrylics. I also loved using colored pencils and charcoal.
ReplyDeleteThanks bunches & bunches for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friend's this month dear friend.

Aw, thank you so much!
