Styling Older Clothes with Ageless Style

It's the third Thursday of the month and time for another ageless style challenge. This month Marsha picked "oldest thing in your closet." I don't have much that's very old since I lost a ton of weight between 2019 and 2020 and needed nearly all new clothes and shoes.

I did find this old shirt that I remember wearing back when my kids were in grade school (I think!) and I figured that definitely had to make it one of the oldest things in my closet. It's a gray, black, and purple cowl/turtleneck that has a rose pattern on it.

It just happens to pair perfectly with my new purple cardigan!

I also styled it underneath my purple sweater a couple weeks ago as a sort of turtleneck/scarf look but I'm not sure I really like it that way. You definitely can't tell there is a pattern to it.

  1. It would be hard for me to figure out the oldest things in my closet! I keep it revolving pretty well. I would say I have some staples that are 10 years old maybe? What a challenge!

    1. Right?! I honestly was stumped until I saw that shirt and realized it had to be pretty old...

  2. Generally I get rid of stuff all the time, but there are a few pieces I have that are just so classic it doesn't make sense to replace them when they are still good. Anyway, I really like the flower design on the shirt and it does go so well with your cardigan.

    1. Thank you! I don't tend to stay the same size for very long so I often toss things for being too tight or too baggy or just not fitting right anymore.

  3. I love what you did here with this turtleneck! It looks fabulous with the pink cardigan. I need to try this with a piece in my closet.

  4. Congrats on the weight loss, that's a great reason not to have a lot of old clothes. My weight has always fluctuated so much over the years depending on what stage of life I was in that I don't have a lot of clothes either. The floral top looks great with the cardigan.

    1. Yep, it's the best one for sure! Somehow I don't mind nearly as much when I have to toss clothes that are too big.

  5. I used to have a great hoodie top with a similar pattern and color palette. I actually like it under the sweater even though you don't see the print.

  6. Brava for styling it two ways... I really love it even under the sweater. It doesn't matter that you can't see the design on it.But you still appreciate the cow.Neck and the longer layer of it. Standing ovation.

  7. I have been stretching my creative muscle lately and putting together outfits I had never considered before - my closet seems like a collection of unrelated items and it makes me crazy!

    1. I hate when I feel like that! I think that is why I have so many jeans and black pants...

  8. I have a few things in my closet that are pretty old but I'd have to think about it. Your top is really cute! Glad you kept it!

  9. I really love the way your top goes with your purple cardigan! And, congrats on losing the weight and keeping it off. lost a lot of weight right after I retired, then I gained it back. But, I kept the clothes because I was determined to wear them again. So, my closet is all sizes, textures, colors, and patterns!

    1. I kept the clothes for 2 years and then ditched them.

  10. How many years is that top then? It still looks great. Do you still wear it?

    1. I have no idea how old it is but I know it's got to be at least 10 years old. I wear it on occasion. These outfit photos weren't taken FOR this post, I had happened to wear the shirt a few times these past couple of months.

  12. Ooooh I love that purple cardigan. Purple is one color that I don't have much of in my closet and I don't know why because I love it so much!

    1. I realized I don't have much purple in my closet either so I've been trying to make an effort to get more purple in there.

  13. Hmm...I've got some pretty old things in there. I think they'd make a very funny post...definitely not as stylish as your shirt!!

    1. I very rarely hang onto pieces very long. I'm kind of surprised his one has lasted in my closet at long as it has.

  14. Clothes can be fun for sure. Do you have a Label Shopper near you? I love some of the deals. Though some are not deals and it's a hit or miss. I still really like it though.

    1. I have never heard of Label Shopper; looks like the closet ones are in Vt, NH, or NY... so quite a long drive away.
